Rahm Emanuel: McCain's people looked at Mitt's 23 tax returns and said "Let's go with Sarah Palin."

Rahm on This Week: Why Did McCain Campaign Pick Palin Over Romney?

By Susie Madrak

?key=1342373047

STEPHANOPOULOS: The campaign has also been pushing very hard for Mitt Romney to release more of his tax returns. He says the public has everything they need to know to understand his finances. And we do know that Mitt Romney made a lot of money. We know he paid a relatively low tax rate. What more will the returns tell us that we don't know?

EMANUEL: George, just two points here that I think are really important. First of all, Mitt Romney's own father said you shouldn't release one year. And already he has released -- in my view, he's released one year. Let's take a step on two points...

STEPHANOPOULOS: He says he's going to release his second.

EMANUEL: ... one on -- OK, transparency and what that says. He has released only one year. To the McCain campaign, he released 23 years. And he's telling the American people, I'm not going to give you what I've given John McCain's people in 2008. And when he gave them 23 years, John McCain's people looked at it and said, "Let's go with Sarah Palin." So whatever's in there is far worse than just the first year.

Emanuel makes the point as well on why the need for the tax returns to be public due to the conflicts of interest re Cayman Island, Bermuda, etc.

Thanks for the link, it was interesting and educational.

I don't like Rahm, but he was magnificent this morning. He smacked George down everytime the fucker tried to interrupted him, and smiled while he was smacking him. George kept trying to interrupt, always in a nasty and snarly way.

George was outraged that the Obama campaign would call Mitt a felon and/or a liar. Outraged, I say.

Rahm didn't give an inch.

Then when the Repub witch came on, George was all sweetness and light with her standard talking points bullshit. Never asked her once about those ads where Mitt called Obama a liar.

I will never forgive that little shit for his treatment of John Kerry at the 2004 debate he hosted with the other ABC dweeb who is now gone - Charley something.

It did my old heart good to hear a Dem stand up for his president, his party, and his people once more. Even if he ain't all he should be - Rahm was fine this morning.

There are a lot of bad things you can say about Rahm Emanuel (and I believe I've said most of them), but damn, the man is an effective surrogate! Like a pit bull, he grabs on and just won't let go. The Obama campaign smells blood in the water over Mitten's tax returns, and Rahm is the right man for the job of dirtying him up.

about the McCain/Palin soliloquy.
Rahm is such a sneaky bastard but being as well connected as he is,i'm thinking he came by that knowledge from a third party source.
Stephanopolus stabbed Bill Clinton in the back for political gain,on that day he became Judas Maximus.
Both turn my stomach.
Bottom line:Mitt will not release tax returns,he'll try to divert our attention with some other chicanery.

The returns were given to the McCain campaign (not the GOP itself, and the distinction matters here). I would be astonished if that were not preceded by a VERY well-crafted non-disclosure agreement stipulating precisely who got to see them and with strict limits on their ability to discuss what they saw. This will be a legal contract, and any McCain staffer who violated it would be looking at a breach-of-contract suit that could utterly ruin them.

It's going to take a mole, a Bradley manning, to get the returns into the hands of someone who'll publish (Wikileaks comes to mind, obviously).

I see what you're saying legally in that regard. But Mittbot's campaign should simply be tormented by being confronted every day by what Rahm is saying here, though.

How he describes what Romney would do in office, is exactly what the GOP wingnuts are doing, RIGHT NOW!
