North Carolina pastor to Joel Osteen: "You've had the week that was coming long before the rain"

John Pavlovitz, head of North Raleigh Community Church in North Carolina, said the “prosperity gospel” minister had discredited his faith by tweeting out banal platitudes as locals mosques and furniture stores offered shelter from the hurricane that flooded Houston.

“You’ve experienced the wrath of millions of people who watched the week unfold and determined they were witnessing in you and your megachurch’s response to the hurricane—everything they believe is wrong about organized Christianity,” Pavlovitz said, “its self-serving greed, its callousness, its tone-deafness in the face of a hurting multitude, its lack of something that looks like Jesus.”

***

“Don’t wait for an invitation, you don’t wait to be shamed by strangers, and you don’t make excuses,” he said.

“I imagine you feel like this has been a rough week,” Pavlovitz wrote. “It hasn’t. You’ve had the week you probably should have had, all this considered. You’ve had the week that was coming long before rain ever started falling in Houston.”

God is punishing USA because:

1. Joel did not rake in more money, and he kept too much for himself.
or,
2. President Trump is an unrepentant whoremonger, and the religious leaders condone it.

Maybe we will get our answer within several weeks. Hurricane Irma is moving west, and it looks good for a turn north and a sweep up the east coast.

So, I'm going out on a limb and saying that the answer is #2. I think that God loves Joel more than Donald.

I first ran across him and his slimy little ass partner about five years ago. He makes my head explode!

He's one of the worst scumbags that I've ever seen! I listened to a few of his old shows and he's just a greedy fear monger. I know there must be gullible elderly emptying their pockets to him. I just got the feeling that they're his target audience.

I saw his greasy head just yesterday when I was channel surfing and it looked like it was just the same old taped show. I sooo hope that he reaps his just rewards!

When the Good Samaritan came upon a man who had been

to help this poor man, he took it upon himself to do the
right thing as a proper Christian would.

This "prosperity gospel" crap has been going on way too long with way too much success. All about money b/s.

It's time for Christianity to be returned and retaken for the values that it is supposed to have. Compassion, aid, love, strength, inclusiveness, etc.

about 15 years ago because I find Christians to be hateful, mean spirited and thuggish. I agree with you nothing has done more to destroy Christianity as a faith tradition than the prosperity gospel.

My husband and I read the entire Bible every year, about 4 chapters each day. The stories still resonate today. And of course I watch Greenleaf on OWN which is produced by a pastor. They always include scriptural references which I look up and discuss with my husband.

I love the Lord and the Word but generally speaking Christians just turn my stomach.

Megachurches especially suck a lot of needed funds out of charities, community projects and schools.

Country churches in the 50s and 60s where I was raised were all very frugal, preachers not paid much, and revivals were held in big tents. A lot of baptisms were held in creeks. Fancy stuff in churches was looked down on, as were fancy people.
