Just a shout out to my local Costco in San Antonio, Texas. We are having gas panic situations with many gas stations running out of fuel, and long, long lines forming for those that do have fuel.
I went to Costco this morning and the Costco employees HAD IT DOWN!!!! They were out at the fuel pumps en masse and were directing customers where to go, what to do, where to exit, etc. And they were not putting up with any bullshit either.
Lines were so long that cars were backed up onto the public streets around the store. When that happens, the more cars that can be brought on to the Costco parking lot, the better it is for traffic and safety on the public street. There were those people in line who were trying to leave 25 feet in between their car and the car in front of them. Costco employees were assertively asking them to move up and keep the lines going.
Kudos to a well run operation. I've already called management to compliment them.

He spoke at the 2012 Dem convention!
And by now we all know they pay a living wage, employee health insurance, etc.

(1,336 posts)and their turnover rate is about the lowest of all "big-box" type stores. I never EVER shop at Walmart or at Home Depot, but support my local Canadian-owned stores as well as Costco. And their service is always great (happy employees is the reason why!).

(2,050 posts)But I only put 4k a year on it or less, I wanted them to put in diesel for my fifth wheel hauler but they said it wouldn't be cost effective.
Kinda strange since they would take nearly all the diesel sales within a 15 mile radius.
I went to the costco in Lacey Wa. and talked to the attendant, she said the main reason they weren't going to put in anymore diesel pumps in stores that didn't already have them was because of the mess from people spilling fuel.
The problem I've seen is that people have a habit of getting back in their cars while the pump is running, diesel foams quite a bit during dispensing and it will spit fuel out the tank if you're not paying attention.
Gasoline will evaporate quickly, diesel not so much, this is why they won't install anymore diesel tanks and pumps.
But yeah, costco is great.

(51,609 posts)and have picketed there several times. Is boycotting Walmart in favor of Costco an option? Do they sell the same items?
I live in Connecticut and there are only a handful of Costcos in the entire state - Enfield, Waterbury, Danbury, Milford and New Britain. However, I'm guessing there are 30 or more Wal-Marts. I think it's similar in Massachusetts.
That said, I think there are probably more Costcos than there are Sams' Clubs in CT. Sams is closer to Costco in that both are more warehouse store oriented (smaller amount of items, but huge quantities of each)

(38,317 posts)You can't buy eight ounces of cheese, you have to buy at least two pounds of it. You can't buy a package of 10 hot dogs, you have to buy 60. Best have a freezer if you are not cooking for a mob.
They also won't touch some of the lower quality stuff WalMart sells.
Their dog food is more highly rated than most familiar brands. That's what our dogs eat. During the olive oil scandal Costco's Kirkland house brand olive oil was rated highly; consumer lab tests proved it wasn't cut with less expensive solvent extracted olive oils or canola oil. Some major brand olive oils didn't fare as well.
I have a mess of siblings and when I was a kid my dad was a fan of Price Club, which Costco later bought. For breakfast cereal we had a choice of corn flakes or oatmeal, bought in bulk. The freezer was full of fish my dad caught, occasionally sausage and such made from game animals friends and family had hunted, or farm animals we'd known... no room for the Price Club / Costco food, which was all dry or canned.

(51,609 posts)My 550 Sq foot apt/condo has no storage or garage. I use my oven for storing dry foods, etc.
If the Walmart customers decided to boycott Walmart, would they have be able to get the same products at the same price at any other retailers or do they pretty much have a retail monopoly in most cities

(14,492 posts)Maybe 1-to-10 ratio, depending on distribution of income. Costcos are rare in low income areas and charge a membership fee. Higher quality merchandise, I think.
I despise Walmart. Forced closing of thousands of mom & pops and used made in America as a ruse.
