(5,586 posts)Some colleges are in pretty rough parts of town. Here in Atlanta, Georgia Tech students have suffered a series of carjackings and robberies.
The cops appear to be flummoxed, and despite increased patrols, cute crimes still happen.
And it's better than arming them all with firearms.

(15,805 posts)Curious though, where's the criticism for all the men whose behaviour made this safety equipment an everyday necessity for young women?
That's a little bit of a stretch to suggest somehow I'm not critical of violence against young women because I find a display of pepper spray for back-to-school a little surprising.
procon
(15,805 posts)Young women are not always safe or well protected, even at school. Walking alone across a large, sprawling campus, through parking garages, or in low trafficked buildings, and just walking to and from school, comes pre-loaded with itinerant risks. I'm surprised that you're surprised at a display of pepper spray that only offers a bit of protection.
Would you have been equally "surprised" if the display featured black pepper spray devices instead of pink ones, or if the picture was a young man in camo holding a gun, instead of a young woman with a book bag holding a coffee cup?
JimGinPA
(14,811 posts)The display clearly says 'Back To School'. It doesn't say "campus" or "parking garage" or "low trafficked buildings". I suppose back to school supplies means something different now than when my kids went to school. I have no problem with young women having pepper spray attached to their car keys (which around here you have to be a senior in high school). But yes, it does surprise me that they'd target a display like this to school children.
procon
(15,805 posts)You give a weak argument, claiming a school is not a campus, really? High schools have parking garages, and almost every campus has buildings that are less used than others, shocking news, yeah? You got all breathless and rushed here in 'surprise' to assert that evidently only very young "children" go to school and they must not buy pepper spray. The logic is lacking; but that's not surprising.
JimGinPA
(14,811 posts)I posted a picture I took At Lowes because I thought it was out of the norm. But I think you're looking for an argument, not a discussion. Why don't you Google Back to school & see what pops up. Someone upthread suggested maybe back to school guns (Walmart), but I really doubt the first few hundred hits will have anything to do with self-defense.
procon
(15,805 posts)Your complaint is not going over too well. If you still perceive that young women who feel the need to buy pepper spray for protection, are not "normal", the comments below seem to be saying otherwise.
JimGinPA
(14,811 posts)Or women (or anyone else for that matter) having tools to defend themselves. It's the back-to-school aspect that I found troubling. Sorry you have trouble understanding that.
If you're just one of those people that feels like they absolutely have to have the last word in order to out-debate someone, please help yourself. I'm not going to engage with you any further on this subject.

(15,805 posts)Meanwhile, young woman will be a little safer as they return to school armed with a pink pepper sprayer. That's a good thing.

(18,663 posts)One stand alone display of pepper spray hardly makes them a gun shop. I believe Lowes also sells security cameras, lights and other products to secure one's home. This seems a reasonable addition to such items and much better choice than the often suggested wasp spray they also sell.

(34,661 posts)you would see my amazement. But,what the hay. The Trump culture has invaded every corner of the Nation.
sarisataka
(18,663 posts)so I only have an outsiders view but Menard's and Home Depot sell similar items.
I think it is appalling that young women are so at risk of violence from domestic partners, acquaintances and strangers but that has been around long before Trump and his Sturmabteilung. Given that the risk of violence is real I fully support the right of women to acquire tools for self-defense. I would not tell any 100lb. co-ed she has to go hand to hand with a sexually aggressive 275lb. football player because I wish the country was a safer place.

If Menard's are selling this item, well that tells me why Lowe's are doing this. They share many of the same buyer points of origin. And nothing sunrises me about John Menard and his operation.

Women should not be allowed tools to defend themselves. A keychain pepper spray is more convenient to carry than a hefty can of beans. We may wish that such items are not necessary but the reality is women, and men for that matter, may be targeted by various sorts of two-legged predators.
The sabre website has a listing summarizing laws of all 50 states. They ran the gamut from minimum restrictions to states which treat the pepper spray as the equivalent of firearms needing the same license.

Pepper spray is not intended for use by children - limited to 18 YO or older in many states and some other countries. Illegal in many countries in Europe and Canada (except police).
Kaleva
(36,312 posts)But in Michigan one has to be at least 18 in order to buy and carry pepper spray so the ad may have been targeted towards college age kids.

(1 post)My daughter goes to a university. About a year ago, a friend of hers was knocked unconscious by a would be mugger as she was walking from her parking space to the bus stop. She suffered a concussion so bad that she had to take the rest of the school year off to recover. Even now, she still suffers some repercussions from the concussion. Her assigned parking lot is the same one that my daughter is assigned to. You bet that I immediately went out and bought my daughter and her roommate pepper spray.
