Excerpt:
A book by Hillary Clintons spiritual adviser, the Rev. Bill Shillady, is being pulled from shelves less than a month after its release after the publisher found it contained extensive plagiarism.
Shillady has also pulled out of a scheduled public conversation with Clinton about her faith at Riverside Church in New York City on Thursday night. The event will still take place, with the Rev. Ginger Gaines-Cirelli, the pastor of Clintons church in Washington, D.C., the Foundry, moderating the conversation.

(146,324 posts)I never heard of the Rev. Shillady. Why would I be interested in his plagiarism? Why is this of interest at all, really? Do you have some sort of comment on why you thought to post it here in DU?

(51,308 posts)Didn't know Hillary even "had a pastor" What does that mean? If you go to a church, somehow you're connected?
This sounds vaguely reminiscent of the Jeremiah Wright controversy....

(146,324 posts)Sounds like the good pastor can't write for himself, but how is that news, really. He's not prominent. He's not a politician. He's just not newsworthy, as far as I can tell.
I hope it wasn't some sort of lame attempt at guilt by association. That would be a really small thing to do, don't you think?

DESCRIPTION
Please join us on Thursday, September 7th to hear from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as she discusses in person her faith and the recent election.
General Admission tickets are $75 and proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit Camp Olmsted.
Thursday, September 7, 2017 * 7:30 p.m. (Doors 5:30 p.m.) * The Riverside Church, New York City
Camps are part of the fabric of our national life. They are often safe havens in the storms that blow across everyone's life and seem particularly difficult for children and teenagers, places where people can get back to basics and remember, or learn for the first time, what's really important. Our families today come in all sizes and shapes, but they all want the same thing: a good job, safety and security, the chance to build a better life for themselves and their kids. Camps are one of the essential building blocks for so many people. -Hillary Clinton, during a speech to the American Camp Association, March 19, 2015
Camp Olmsted is located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, and has been serving children from New York Citys neighborhoods for more than 110 years. Our program serves boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 14 and often provides their first outdoor camping experience. During our program campers enjoy swimming, hiking, sports, art, reading, and ropes challenge course activities. They also get to express themselves through performances and creative writing. These activities are designed to build their self-esteem and enhance their social skills. Our campers leave their time at Olmsted with new friends, new skills, and more confidence. Yes, twelve days can have an impact that lasts a lifetime!

(61,690 posts)Republicans always run around pointing out guilt by association on other Republicans. They never stop pointing out all the weaknesses and problems and issues - true or not - among their fellow Republicans. "If we don't talk about it all the time everybody else will anyway" is the Republican mantra when it comes to discussing weaknesses and failures of their fellow Republicans. They also believe strongly in amplifying rumors and innuendo as long as it reflects badly on their own party.
Wait.

(12,448 posts)This is bizarre. The OP, I mean, not the non-story of a cleric who did a stupid thing. Anything to tarnish Hillary Clinton, obviously. Fell flat, though. With a thud.
BainsBane
(53,041 posts)It says so much. It shows the compulsion to reach for anything to try to discredit Hillary, and it shows how little there is. Imagine. For years the Kremlin, Rove, the GOP, Bannon, Trump, the gun lobby, the health insurance industry, and an endless array of organizations have targeted Hillary Clinton, and this is what the OP was able to come up with.

(67,782 posts)....for nine years, he's been a minister for 36 years, and I'm sure he's come across tens of thousands of people during that time.
Why is he characterized as "Hillary Clinton's pastor"? Why not any of those tens of thousands' "pastor"? Seems questionably unfair.

(18,303 posts)to Hillary? This type of behavior by pastors must be stopped stat!
The problem is widespread. My own pastor is guilty of praying without attribution. Last Sunday he talked about "loving your neighbor as yourself", and I thought it was an amazing sentiment.
Imagine my shock when I later learned that my pastor didn't write those words. It's a direct quote taken out of some book that he had read. And he didn't tell us!

Rev. Bill Shillady is not Hillary Clinton's "pastor". Rev. Bill Shillady has not been a pastor at any church since 2008, six years after they met. Since that time Rev. Bill Shillady has been Executive Director of United Methodist City Society in New York City.
Riverside Church is not Hillary Clinton's church, she's just appearing there to benefit a camp in upstate NY (and she's not making a penny for her appearance) Indeed, Riverside Church is not a Methodist Church, and Hillary Clinton has been a Methodist her entire life.
Rev. Bill Shillady is Hillary Clinton's spiritual advisor. He has presided over a few (not many) Clinton family ceremonies over the years - Chelsea's wedding, Hillary's mother's memorial service, and blessed Hillary's grandchildren.
