From Facebook.
And if you must evacuate with your pets there is this:
IMPORTANT!!
Rec'd this info this morning:
If you are evacuating to a hotel/motel and they say they DONT accept pets, dont get ugly but simply tell them thats against the law & Fema established that after hurricane Katrina!
The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS) was a bi-partisan initiative in the United States House of Representatives to require states seeking Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance to accommodate pets and service animals in their plans for evacuating residents facing disasters.
They have to accept pets during a state of emergency. Now you don't have to leave them behind or go to a pet-friendly shelter.

(11,927 posts)What it says is:
"The 2006 Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 essentially mandates that FEMA take into account the needs of pet owners when developing disaster preparedness plans. It also authorizes the director of the agency to fund emergency shelter facilities for pets. It makes no mention of hotels or motels. The summary on Congress.gov reads:
Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 Amends the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to require the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ensure that state and local emergency preparedness operational plans address the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals prior to, during, and following a major disaster or emergency.
Authorizes the Director to: (1) study and develop plans that take into account the needs of individuals with pets and service animals prior to, during, and following a major disaster or emergency; and (2) make financial contributions, on the basis of programs or projects approved by the Director, to the states and local authorities for animal emergency preparedness purposes, including the procurement, construction, leasing, or renovating of emergency shelter facilities and materials that will accommodate people with pets and service animals.
Authorizes federal agencies to provide, as assistance essential to meeting threats to life and property resulting from a major disaster, rescue, care, shelter, and essential needs to individuals with household pets and service animals and to such pets and animals."

Bush on October 6, 2006.[3] The bill is now Public Law 109-308.[4]

(3,847 posts)evacuation with pets....the amount of pets left behind in NOLA things have changed. Many animals left have never been rescued or returned or adopted. Tragic situation that can be changed if the will is strong enough.

(23,158 posts)There's no safe place in FL, but will GA & AL allow out of staters evacuating the storm to bring their pets? I didn't think so, that's why we are planning on staying since we have a very old 100 lb dog and 2 old cats. Was I wrong, hope so! Right now it's predicted to be a Cat 1 storm when it hits town and i think we have a good chance of being ok. My only real worry is all the old, really tall, live oak trees on our lot. The thing with hurricanes is you just never know, they are so unpredictable and it makes such s major difference which side of the storm you're on. Usually Jax is on the quieter side, so escapes relatively unharmed, but this time could be different?

FEMA has to make allowances but private hotels set their own rules.
There was just an article on the news here in Florida about that. The Florida hotel and motel association is urging hotels to relax there Pet standards. But it is entirely up to that hotel.
And when you were evacuating am at the mercy of a hotel, threatening them is usually not the best policy. Asking for compassion normally works much better.

pets are no longer considered possessions by the authorities - they are MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY, they are crucial to their owner's sense of well-being, ESPECIALLY in times of crisis
