(60,010 posts)but non-stop just like that...for hours and hours and you can't block it, even with earplugs. You hear a lot of high wind wailing noise, and whistles, and shrieks, just like the books say. Never heard the wind shriek before my first overhead hurricane.
'Course you can't sleep, you really do not dare, in case something crashes into the house, so you just hunker.
In the dark, cause the power goers out, way too soon, and the night is years long.
when you see people the next day stumbling around what used to be familiar, part of the numb look on their face is sleep deprivation.
Any breeze, any light wind makes you anxious, for years after being in one. Dogs and cats esp. get PTSD, my poor cat would run under the bed at a mild breeze.

(6,568 posts)A decade ago, I was the guy wandering the streets during a hurricane with a video camera and an SLR in hand.
Now I just love to watch. Left a TINY space in my boards so I can put my GoPro there and maybe get some cool video (if my plants aren't blocking it).
