Please check in, tell us where you live, weather conditions, power status, etc.
I'm in Oakland Park east. Narrowly avoided a couple tornadoes during the night.
We still Have power and cable for now. Just took the dog out into yard for morning biz.
We're in a boarded up one story home. Lots of landscape damage already.
Sustained winds at about 50 mph. Gusts 70-80.
Expecting worsening winds and a duration of ten-twelve hours.
Please stay safe.

(3,412 posts)Getting rain and wind gusts. Nothing like the West Coast. Biggest worries here (I think) will be tornadoes spinning off the winds and power outages.
For us so far so good, but portions of the county (Palm Beach) are already without power.

(16,172 posts)wind picking up, not too bad though. raining a bit harder in bands, house is boarded up, generator is gassed and ready. We are the only family on the block that stayed. I do have to say we are a block of snowbirders. We are the old farts on the block having been here 37 years in the same house.
My biggest wish is that Duke energy would have come through and cut all the branches back from the lines prior to hurricane season.
A bit of maintenance would go a long way here.
Siwsan
(26,267 posts)AFTER we had our massive ice storm, back in 2013, Consumer's Energy finally got around to trimming trees and branches. Had that been done BEFORE the storm, as in routine maintenance type work, we might not have had a week long power outage.

No power or Satellite TV.
Multiple trees down but house appears to be intact.
We have a 5 acre tropical fruit grove. Fruit trees appear to be ok...palms are as one would expect. Ornamental and ficus appear to be worst off.
Unable to check on workshop, tractor and other equip storage at this point.
Radio indicates hurricane force winds coming through here until noon...

(14,565 posts)20 miles east of the NHC forecast. Notice the radar imagery in relationship to the NHC forecast line in purple:
https://www.sfwmd.gov/weather-radar/current-weather-conditions
On edit: That site just moved the purple forecast line east to keep up with the latest forecast. I guess it changed based on the 11 AM update as I was typing. There was a sharp difference for hours.
Not good for me since it places Irma and specifically the "dirty side" closer to my home in southwest Miami.
But that should be okay. I'm hardly complaining considering the projected track of just a couple of days ago, basically covering my house.
I've been remote monitoring a security camera that is placed inside my front window in Miami. The neighbor across the street lost a couple of tree branches, one falling very close to his truck. I might lose some smaller trees that are bending near sideways. I'm happy I removed a very old and thinned out weeping bottlebrush tree from the front yard this spring. That tree would not have survived Irma. When I cut it down it had a 7 inch hollow ring in the center.
Now I need Irma to remain considerably east of my sister's home in Winter Garden, southwest of Orlando. That's where I am now. The track last night looked fine. I waited for the touted Euro model to report at 1:45 AM before grabbing some sleep. Unfortunately the Euro was most accurate of all during the track toward Florida but appears to be the worst of all forecasting the path after the northward turn. It had Irma quite a bit west of the NHC forecast. In reality it is east.
The champion model again appears to be UKMET. That will be one of the forecast stories coming out of this event. UKMET was the only track that nailed Matthew almost perfectly in the late going last year. This time UKMET has been running a close second to Euro across the Atlantic but they differed sharply in the final forecast after the northward turn. UKMET was notably east of the consensus line after the turn while Euro was west.

(11,949 posts)Getting nervous that is moving more easterly. As long as we are 50-60 miles from the eye my food should be ok.
Did not board up but did lay down a big tree in my back yard that I felt threatened my house. Will have to clean it up after the storm passes.

(1,716 posts)Yikes my parents and aunt in their 90s. Had plans to bring them to Orlando area until track shifted to Miami coming straight to Orlando. So due to recent surgery and likely discomfort on 4 hour car trip they chose to stay. They lost power two hours ago.
Building new construction and they have shutters so probably better off than at the shitshow in Estero arena. Building has generator for elevator and they are probably half mile back from ocean.
I will go get them on Tuesday if they have no power. Eye is coming...Think good thoughts!

(16,172 posts)at my house we've had 4 power outages of short duration. Most likely due to branches on the lines and rain. For some reason they don't seem to play well together.
wind at 30 maybe, gusts to 45 sporadic rain.

(31,261 posts)They can be buried, but the planning must be well thought out and the buried lines must be leak tight. Imagine stepping on wet ground where a 1 megawatt line is leaking? Barbecue much?

(14,565 posts)But likely not for much longer. First major flicker a few minutes ago. This is likely my final post for days.
Winds whipping outside and sideways rain.
I was able to monitor my home in Miami until 6:43 PM when the security camera froze. Frankly, I was shocked. I thought I was home free in terms of not losing power.
Now I have been unable to contact any neighbors for an update. I just hope it was a normal outage in the late stages, and not something low percentage like a tornado.
I contacted my aunt about a mile away. She was very shook up. Trees down all over her property along with her fence. She estimated clean up at a month or longer. Her tenant drove to visit his mother and reported so many trees down that major roads were blocked so he had to maneuver around them. Now I understand the area is under curfew until 7 AM Monday.
Hard to believe the NFL games were played today.
Everyone in this household ate a big meal tonight and the air conditioning is turned very cold...brief compensation for the seemingly inevitable.
I can't imagine what this storm would have done to Florida if Cuba hadn't weakened it.
