(23,337 posts)won't get a WH invite either for stating that climate change is a thing and 45 made a bad decision taking the US out of the Paris treaty. http://onairwithryan.iheart.com/content/2017-09-10-miss-north-dakota-cara-mund-crowned-miss-america/

(13,057 posts)Longhorns are unabashedly liberal, much like the city the campus resides in . I just hope she will not be getting death threats by crazy RW extremists.
I know I shouldn't but that wasn't a question or answer I would expect at a beauty pageant. good for both!

(3,438 posts)....She represents what is good about America.... El mal hombre ( mal:bad, evil, sinister, mean) now occupying the WH does not--he represents racism, bigotry and hate towards non white, non Christian, lgbt, immigrants and refugees and after Charlottsville ( the death of Ms. Heyer, those injured ) he revealed his hate for liberals, Jews...so,well--that's almost everyone....really.
In one sentence this young lady denounced him, his support for hate, bigotry and racism in America and in front of the entire country without hesitation she spoke la verdad.

(1,474 posts)Seems so seldom I can say "I am proud of Texas!".
Maybe I am just proud Texas Youth or specifically Miss Texas.
I hate beauty pageants and when I have seen contestants giving answers to questions have usually felt they were shallow.
But Miss Texas, YOU ROCK! Great response! Love to see youth being intelligent and outspoken.
Well said.

(10,497 posts)The way everyone was pitching in to help, no matter their color or Party affiliation. No matter their wealth, or lack thereof, that part of Harvey was wonderful!
We see so much bad because that is what gets the attention, but there are so many good people out there just doing their thing. That is not to say that all who helped are good and those who didn't are bad, but there was some good in almost everyone.

(6,017 posts)Q: Last month a demonstration of neo-Nazis, white supremacists and the KKK in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned violent and a counter protestor was killed. The president said there was shared blame with "very fine people on both sides." Were there? Tell me yes or no and explain.
A: I think that the white supremacist issue it was very obvious that it was a terrorist attack. And I think that President Donald Trump should have made a statement earlier addressing the fact and making sure all Americans feel safe in this country. That is the number one issue right now.
SunSeeker
(51,670 posts)Instead, she addressed another aspect of Trump's awful Charlottesville response. Her description of the deadly car attack as a "terrorist attack" is how Trump should have described it. I give her props for saying it. I'm sure she has lots of friends and family in Texas who vehemently disagree with her and it took some guts to say that.
lame54
(35,318 posts)SunSeeker
(51,670 posts)and thus all the right wingers there were terrorists. But I don't think that's what she meant. I think she was just referring to the right winger who rammed his car into the crowd.
lame54
(35,318 posts)The whole demonstration was out of line and Trump should have condemned it
SunSeeker
(51,670 posts)There was not just one demonstration. There was the neo-Nazi MAGA uniform-clad tiki torch march Friday night, terrorizing synagogues and African American churches. There was the neo-Confederate protest at the Lee statue on Saturday morning. There was the alt-right loser who killed a women with his car after that Lee statue protest was dispersed. It is pretty obvious she was just referring to the car ramming.
lame54
(35,318 posts)She put it in her own words that she was disappointed in the president
Her answer made it clear which side she was on re: Charlottesville
SunSeeker
(51,670 posts)But I do appreciate her criticising Trump's refusal to call the car ramming a terrorist act.
LanternWaste
(37,748 posts)You then missed her very obvious implication? Or is literal interpretation not just for fundies anymore?
SunSeeker
(51,670 posts)I gave her props for saying the car ramming was a "terrorist act." But there remains the issue of the Nazis and all those who marched with them. They should be condemned as well.
forgotmylogin
(7,530 posts)They worded the question "check a box and 100 words or less" and she was very poised and intelligent to not fall into a trap of making it about her.
SunSeeker
(51,670 posts)She could have condemned all the right wing protesters that marched that day, but look what happened to Hillary when she called such people deplorables.
Saying there were not "very fine people on both sides" does not make it about her. She could have avoided the deplorables trap with a simple No, followed it up with what she did say.
Regardless, l give her props for what she did say. It was spot on and powerfully delivered.

(54,436 posts)But I'd have been chagrined if I'd gotten an invite to the White House this year. Three years in a row to the Obama White House (and I'm sure Trump's people have the names) should suffice to disqualify me from being on their list as long as the Duke of Orange is holding court there.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)filmed at a Rump rally has been battling left wing hate mail ever since. More than a little misunderstanding for him.
Hadn't thought of it, but no doubt a lot of people are refusing invitations, and only a few because they couldn't risk being seen there.
DFW
(54,436 posts)There's no way those connections would lead to even an inadvertent invitation to the White House so long a Republican is sitting in there. And even if they did, I wouldn't go. For Clinton and Obama, I gladly got on the plane and flew 4000 miles. For Trump, I wouldn't walk across the street.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)How wonderful that must have been.
I'll never get an invite from Rump either, but I wouldn't either. When our slimy ALEC-member congressman and his entourage walked into a place I was volunteering and came straight at me, I almost knocked over a table putting other, happier constituents between me and the handshakes and cameras.
Hortensis

(32,087 posts)The really great thing about this is that she seems typical of her generation. But, still. It took guts for her to speak up in that way. Texas should be proud of her, as should the rest of her country.

(58,785 posts)Guessing she may not have much more intellectual curiosity as our cat, but that's a perfectly normal way to be. A lot of people are like that and can live very good, worthy lives in the personal worlds they do care about.
I just looked her up out of curiosity. Never went to college, so right on that guess. But she did sign on with Donald Trump's modeling agency, which announced it was closing down in April, but there's an unconfirmed rumor it's being investigated by the NY AG's office. Good grief!
Last mention, she was selling real estate in Brentwood, Los Angeles. 28 now and, best guess, will marry someone before long who can afford to purchase in Brentwood. Wish her well.

(11,564 posts)but that is surely the most cogent and on-point answer I've ever seen a beauty contestant give. Even the diction and conviction with which she said it were good.
With that, she is now sitting at #1, out of 8 or 9.
