Although Trump is quite unpopular, the political map hasnt changed much in the eight months since Trump won (not surprisingly). Compared to his standing nationally, Trump is still strong in key swing states.2 He has, however, experienced a disproportionate drop off in his popularity in red states, suggesting the presidents base isnt as solid as it once was.
Overall, Trumps relative popularity in each state tracks very closely3 with how well he did in each state in November. Heres an average of Gallup and SurveyMonkeys net approval ratings4 compared to Trumps margin over Clinton in each state:
.......
Trumps best net approval ratings are in West Virginia (+21 percentage points) and Wyoming (+20 points). Those were his two strongest states last November. His lowest net approval ratings are in Vermont (-41 points) and Massachusetts (-38 points), two of his worst states in 2016.
Trumps also still more popular in key Midwestern swing states than he is nationally. His net approval ratings in the states that helped put him over the top in 2016 (Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin) ranged from -10 percentage points to -12 percentage points. Thats slightly better than his net approval nationally (-15 percentage points) during the same period.
