Maine woman ordered by city to take down "I love Trump" & "He Won, Get over it" signs

'Shocked': Maine woman ordered by city to take down pro-Trump signs

Susan Reitman has hung two banners on her front gate: one that says "I love Trump" and another that says "He Won, Get over it." She received a notice from the city’s code enforcement office a few days ago, asking her to take them down. "I was shocked," she said. "This is my freedom of speech. People have a right to voice their opinion."

Assistant Code Officer Bill Butler said another Rockland resident complained about the signs' size. The city ordinance states residential signs can be no larger than 2 square feet. Reitman’s signs are a little larger than 3 feet by 2 feet. "They’re well over the limit," said Butler.

He said residents need to apply for permits to display signs like that. They are able to follow an appeals process, if their permits are denied. Reitman said she wasn’t aware of the ordinance, and feels it should be changed to allow for this kind of political speech. She has until Friday to remove the banners, or else face a fine between $100-$1,000 a day.

Reitman has no plans to pay fines or remove signs. "If I have to sit in jail for the rest of eternity, that’s my choice," she said. "I guess I’m being stubborn ... but I’m not going to back down from what I believe."

is telling her she can't have a Trump sign, but the issue is that her particular Trump sign is three times the maximum size for any sign in her residential zone.

Instead of saying "OK, my sign's too big, I'll just get a smaller one," she's saying "OK, I'll sit in a jail cell because I'm stubborn."

Good for her. Hope she enjoys her time behind bars, if it comes to that.

...one of the first things you do is look at the deed restrictions, the ordinances that will affect you, and organizations that will influence your decisions about the property, such as a home owner's association. If those things don't work for you, you move on. It's no different that assessing if the property has adequate bathrooms or bedrooms for your needs. Those restrictions affect property values, safety, and the quality of life in a community. Some people place a higher priority over the restrictions on the outside of the house than on the number of bedrooms. It's a feature of the property, just as the lot size is. The lady needs to comply with her community's property restrictions or move on.

I lived in Georgia with a homeowner's association. They were always complaining about something. When I moved, I had stained my concrete a little darker...there were marks that predated my ownership. They told me I had to rip out the concrete for doing this...I sent them 25 pictures of other's houses who had done the same thing with no repercussions...it was always hit or miss...so they backed down. They approved my paint color, but then changed their mind...so annoying. I refused to change the color and had kept the approval letter But even if you don't have a homeowner association...your area can still have rules. We wanted a picket fence in front for the dogs here in Ohio, but you can't fence the front lawn. All the Trump supporters have to take down their signs...the last few are now gone...everyone else had already done so. Our area went for Hillary anyway.

legislate the size, shape and location of yard signs without running afoul of the 1st amendment.

The key is that the locality in question apply their restrictions consistently and without regard to content.

If Ms. Reitman can show where the city has not done so, she would have a valid cause to sue the city.

Just make sure the size of your signs comply with ordinance. I guess since she's a Rethug, the rest of the world needs to make an exception for her. If that were a liberal sign, how long do you think it'd take for someone to plow through that fence with a car?

I've actually been here for many years, just never posted or responded to anything. It's nice to have a place to speak my mind about my politics without worrying about losing my job or being blacklisted in my field.

... is cut each sign in half, then display them together.

Unless the town has a limit on the number of signs.

Or, unless she's rich enough to afford the fines and/or lawyers. Or maybe her lawyers can be paid by the RNC or by Trump's campaign funds.
