(4,940 posts)The firm, which is privately held, began as a company called Data Mark, which was founded in the early 1980s by Bob and Todd Urosevich. In 1984, brothers William and Robert Ahmanson bought a 68 percent stake in Data Mark, and changed the companys name to American Information Services (AIS). Then, in 1987, McCarthy & Co, an Omaha investment group, acquired a minority share in AIS.

(70,520 posts)Russias cyberattack on the U.S. electoral system before Donald Trumps election was far more widespread than has been publicly revealed, including incursions into voter databases and software systems in almost twice as many states as previously reported.
In Illinois, investigators found evidence that cyber intruders tried to delete or alter voter data. The hackers accessed software designed to be used by poll workers on Election Day, and in at least one state accessed a campaign finance database. Details of the wave of attacks, in the summer and fall of 2016, were provided by three people with direct knowledge of the U.S. investigation into the matter. In all, the Russian hackers hit systems in a total of 39 states, one of them said.

(9,524 posts)Never forget watching the red shift on election night. Saw the same thing in 2016, and said to my friends, "I've seen this before. THey stole it again." I was not one of those people who was sure Hillary would win. Too much hacking and Russia stuff ahead of the election. So it was of course a big disappointment but not a surprise. Just like in 2004.

(4,609 posts)are already targeted and vulnerable to repeat performances. Between gerrymandering, homegrown election rigging/manipulation and "Russification" I am very doubtful about "throwing the bums out" in the upcoming elections. Election integrity is crucial. The Russians know it. The drastic dimensions of what happened in 2016 are still not fully appreciated or understood by many in the USA.

(15,222 posts)That Russia "scanned or targeted" voting systems in 39 states, but not one vote was manipulated by Russia in the General Election, and that Trump actually won?
Come on!!! I've got some ocean front property in Arizona that I'd love to sell.
The election was hacked and Heir Trumpenmeister is an illegitimate president.

(5,210 posts)Altho I will say that it's not like we've not had stolen elections thanks to those damn machines prior to this, so I don't know if it was the Russians or the Republicans, but SOMEBODY did this:
http://www.palmerreport.com/opinion/rigged-election-donald-trump-won-every-surprise-swing-state-by-the-same-1-margin/118/
The most commonly posited explanation of Donald Trumps shocking election victory was that every professional pollster in the nation despite each working independently and using differing methodologies somehow managed to overlook the same pockets of Trump voters in these states. If such pockets did exist, they would have existed in varying sizes in each of the four states, thus resulting in different sized wins in each.
Ask any statistician and theyll tell you that a reasonable distribution of the results would have been Trump winning one of the states by one percent, won one of them by perhaps three percent, won one of them by two percent, lost one of them by one percent, or something along those lines. But instead the voting tallies looked startlingly different from any natural distribution. In fact they looked startlingly the same.
According to the New York Times, the voting results broke down like this: Trump won Florida by just over one percent of the vote. He also won Pennsylvania by just over one percent. He won Michigan by just under one percent. And he won Wisconsin by precisely one percent. Thats not how numbers tend to work in the real world.
On its own, this kind of suspiciously consistent numerical dispersion across the four states that decided the election would be something that could be written off as a mere fluke. But when you put it within the context of the numerous other ways in which the voting tallies make no mathematical sense, it points to the numbers having been rigged or altered.

(7,318 posts)the voting machines are not hooked up to the internet, so they cant be hacked that way. In person, yes, but not otherwise. Now voter databases being tampered with, yes. Change party affiliation, mark someone dead, change their address. Probably was done. That being said the votes wouldn't be altered, just the ability to vote. Bad also.

(3,194 posts)The machines have to upload their data results, and there is definitely an internet connection between them and the central tabulators.

(15,222 posts)Some company manufacturers the voting machine and installs software or operating system whatever the heck you want to call it. That installation could be where the hacks actually occur.
Think they might have Kaspersky virus protection?

(7,318 posts)"To hack a voting machine remotely, you might think it has to be plugged in to the Internet. Most voting machines are never plugged directly into the Internet. But all voting machines must accept electronic input files from other computers: these ballot definition files tell the vote-counting program which candidates are on the ballot. These files are transferred to the voting machine, before each election, by inserting a cartridge or memory card into the voting machine. These cartridges are prepared on an Election Management System (EMS) computer. If that computer is hacked, then it can prepare fraudulent ballot-definition cartridges. Are those EMS computers ever connected to the Internet? Most of them probably are, from time to time; its hard to tell for sure, given the equivocations of many election administrators."
doesn't sound 100% wrong at all. Maybe some? Maybe none? Maybe they are plugged in to update and then a secure scan is done to check for malware? Its hard to tell for sure.

(7,318 posts)the voting machines having a internet connection between them and the central tabulators. Not that this doesn't happen, I certainly don't know everything but not presenting any evidence for it leads me to doubt it.

(3,194 posts)I've been attacked for saying that there is little reason to bother voting, or even supporting the political process, when there is absolutely no reason to trust the validity of the election results.
If machines can and probably have FIXED several elections in my lifetime, what real point is there? And when the Democratic party just sits by and allows it to happen, why should they be supported? They're as guilty as the ones STEALING the elections. At best they're a pathetic Charlie Brown to the repubs Lucy and her football.
