Moderate Blue Dogs see new influence over Dem recruitment

BY BEN KAMISAR - 09/21/17 12:00 PM EDT

Moderate Democrats in the Blue Dog Coalition are endorsing a slate of candidates Thursday in Republican-leaning districts, as they look to put their mark on the party’s 2018 midterm push.

The group has been working hand-in-glove with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) on recruiting candidates, a departure from previous years when moderates found themselves kicked to the curb by the House Democratic campaign arm.

As Democrats look at an expanded battlefield that includes 24 GOP-held House districts won by Hillary Clinton in November, Blue Dogs believe their expanded seat at the Democratic campaigning table will help to broaden the party's appeal to include more moderate voters.

The Blue Dogs’ first wave of endorsements includes eight candidates, all but one of them in districts President Trump won in 2016. The group is expected to announce dozens more endorsements throughout the upcoming cycle. “These candidates are outstanding candidates...their opponents are flawed or have extreme vulnerabilities because of extremist stances we don’t think match up with that particular district,” said Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.), a Blue Dog member who has helped to spearhead candidate recruitment.

we take back the house in 2018. Blue wave would be nice, but we just need to do whatever it takes to win before it's too late.

Why don't we just run real Democrats, instead of these shaky, spineless twerps who scuttle away at the first shadow of an intimation of opposition?

And I would vote for one in an NY minute. Better a blue dog than red. Purism will get us nothing, nothing, nada. Oh I'm wrong, it will get us Cornyn, Cruz, Ghomert, Flores and Blumenthal - no Thank you.

It's hopeless. There's no point. Let's run a blue dog who will practically caucus with the Republicans, because that's as good as we can ever do, even when he loses. The people of those districts actually like Louie Gohmert or Steve Stockman or Steve King, and you can't possibly change their minds. I mean, Stephen Colbert made fun of one of them once, and they still got re-elected. Can't be done.

Got it. No wonder the spineless twerps enjoy such popularity in some quarters.

The GOP still tends to get what it wants. We really need to concentrate on regaining local power for fair elections. We have to adress messaging. I think this keeps messaging mixed and is the reason many say both parties are alike.

Not one that splinters. I used to believe and accepted blue dogs until I realised how they are used to define center as left and watched this country continue to move right.

We need to increase the size of our party and become competitive in Trump states. It's a mountain to climb, but essential to win back the House and Senate.

We cannot abandon any part of the country to the GOP and in some areas liberal Democrats have little chance of winning. Even the most conservative Democrat is likely to be better than the Republican who would be in office otherwise.

that way. I think populist D ideas, that used to win these states have a better chance if they had good messaging. I don't think this is the way to win and usually means we lose even when winning - as Lieberman, Baucus and others of that ilk have proven. But we shall see.
