"Trump just made his race problem so much worse"

"The dark racial sentiment in Trump's NBA and NFL criticism

Washington (CNN)In the last 24 hours, President Donald Trump has criticized NFL players who refuse to stand for the national anthem and NBA superstar Steph Curry for expressing ambivalence about whether or not to attend the traditional White House celebration for champions in professional sports.

On Friday night in Alabama, Trump condemned football players who either sit or protest in some other way during the national anthem -- and chastised the NFL owners for not coming down harder on them.
"Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He is fired. He's fired!" Trump said to considerable applause from the overwhelmingly white crowd. "Total disrespect of our heritage, a total disrespect of everything that we stand for. Everything that we stand for."
Then, on Saturday morning, Trump tweeted this about Curry: "Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!"

Much more at link. This isn't just about the NFL or even police violence anymore.

When, given all the water under the bridge -- both in terms of our country's history and the more narrow history of Trump's campaign -- you make comments about how the athletes in predominantly black pro sports leagues should just be happy with what they have and not complain, you aren't doing it by accident. You really believe it.

that he's usually been one of those both-sides-do-it types. Maybe Trump is getting to be too much for pretty much everybody who can walk upright and doesn't draw flies.

Not only is Cilizza a bothsideist (who wrote 50 stories on HRC's emails, but that's a different story), he is ignorant of history.

He writes this article as if the racism of Nixon and Reagan didn't exist. As if the GOP hasn't been pandering to racists for 40 years.

If you don't learn history you're doomed to repeat it.

He doesn't seem like the the type to think at much less think ahead.

The pattern is there, as you pointed out. All he ever does is incite.

The president did not anticipate Goodell, several NFL owners, LeBron, Stevie Wonder, and MLB players all coming out on the side of Kaepernick.

The president BADLY misjudged this one.

Mr. 27.5 (LeBron's name for him) is going to back down. Or his presidency will break down over this.

Because this controversy will break him. If pro athletes AND their teams stand against Trump it will sink his presidency.

Let him have his 10% base of hardcore racists. Americans love sports and if all their heroes AND the team billionaire owners tell Americans that 27.5 is toxic it will sink his approval ratings. Once he gets below 28% or so the GOP congress will jump ship and we'll be done.

This puts the NFL in a really bad position. I say they weasel out because at the end of the day all they care about is making money.

"The dark racial sentiment in Nixon's War on Drugs, according to Ehrlichman"

Cilizza is about 40 years too late.

Special lineage. Father issues. Early surprise success. Setbacks and enemies and challenges. He is always turned back at first, then pushes through.

He is playing out like a very familiar, very basic narrative. What I dread is the next step; success.

Moses, Hercules, Arthur, Horus, Beowulf. And now Trump?
