There have been a number of misleading posts -- and headlines -- about this.
Case in point: an article in the Guardian where the headline says "Pittsburgh Steelers to boycott national anthem as Donald Trump row escalates":
http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/us-sport/pittsburgh-steelers-national-anthem-donald-trump-take-a-knee-protest-chicago-bears-a7964766.html
That's a completely misleading headline, as the quotes from the coach make clear:
He added: If a guy wants to go about his normal business and participate in the anthem, he shouldnt have to be forced to choose sides. If a guy feels the need to do something, he shouldnt be separated from his teammate who chooses not to.
So were not participating today. Thats our decision. Were going to be 100 per cent. We came here to play a football game. Thats our intent.

(13,081 posts)And that's why it's played at most games but not all -- nobody paid for the others.
The only reason the players are on the field during the anthem is because the military paid extra for it.
