Sports is supposed to be a neutral place where people enjoy a game, not laud war or the war machine. The problem comes because we have gotten used to mixing so-called patriotism with sports. In fascist countries and dictatorships the military is present everywhere. The military does not run our country. It is a tool our nation uses to protect itself.
Having the military at these events is nothing more than a recruiting tool. That is how it started. Military recruiters also show up at high schools to sign up young men to go into the military. It is too pervasive in our society. That is the problem.
I think Society has created this monster by mixing things like this. There's a reason the military and politics should stay out of religion. There is also a good reason for the military to stay out of things that has a captive audience. All kinds of people attend sporting events. Different beliefs that people have should be taken into account as much as honoring a war machine.

Your post made me think about Nazi propaganda films exalting the physical prowess of the "pure Aryan race."

(14,492 posts)If the NFL wanted to honor veterans who served to protect the NFL, they should pay for that effort. I mean, they've got money running out their frickin' ears. Am I missing something here?

The fact that was use sports as a war replacement these days is progress. Even the fans have mellowed out, its rare thing these days indeed to see a post game riot topple a sitting government.
Its actually almost amazing that we have reduced our over the top military role in sports to mostly football here. In China they cant even play pong pong without the PLA getting in on the act.

It may introduce, however, some other and more interesting issues.

all the other advertiser's. The ROTC even in college and high school has nothing to do with the overall population of the student body. It also has nothing to do with the overall population of the United States. We should not have people in uniform with weapons walking our streets. When we are in a weekend trying to enjoy ourselves we have to worship military might? I know it's a hard thing to happen but it needs to be removed. What if there were no wars related to our country. Could the population not be left at peace? To enjoy their peace?
Don't get me wrong. We need the military. To defend our country if we are attacked. But not to permeate every single moment of our lives.
