Trump will win kneeling controversy

David Frum, the smartest conservative, in Atlantic, points out that the Flag etc are popular and that Trump knows that. He has started this controversy to bolster his support after his terrible week. Most people will be opposed to dissing the flag etc. so People will support Trump. Again the wisdom of Samuel Johnson pointing out that patriotism is the last refuse of scoundrels - because it works. So Frum says the smart reaction to Trump would be to praise the flag, wrap ourselves in the flag, and that for which it stands, free speech etc, ending with a call for a full public investigation of Trump's possible treason with Russia.

Anyone or go against du rules but what was pointed out to me during the anthem was not the kneelers but the intense way those who stood arm and arm side by side people of all colors. Their determination to show support for the flag or trump. Which fuels the point of frum

It's like putting your hand on the players' shoulders. Unless that's changed they're supporting the kneelers while not saying they ARE them, i.e. Black men or those who identify with those killed.

One of the threads today opened my eyes to the fact that the military pays for all that overt patriotism at games to gin up recruitment. You'd think it was a sacred rite, and as a relatively recent fan I really didn't know.

Trump screwed up hugely, yet again, because he is not a real rich person, never really built wealth, and just, overall, has no concept about how money in this country works.

NFL Football, and professional sports in general, is a HUGE FUCKING MULTIBILLION $$$$ INDUSTRY. The players that he is insulting are ENORMOUS cash cows for the teams for which they play. Regardless of whether you are a racist asshole, you don't "just fire" the guy that is drawing millions for your operation every time he goes out and throws the ball around. Obviously, that person would just go to another team whose owner isn't quite as stupid and start generating the magic cash fountain for them. When I say "obviously", I mean obvious to anyone who isn't a total dullard like Donald Trump.

At the same time, Trump seems to have zero understanding of real sports fans. Their teams are their lives. This is what they do and what think about all the time. They spend THOUSANDS of their hard-earned $$$ on tickets to see these games to watch their teams win. Do you really think they give a fuck about whether their players stand for a song? Fuck, no.

So Mr. Frum, I'm afraid, is absolutely dead wrong about this. Trump once again pissed off the wrong people--those people in this country who just happen to have all the money. And so this is going to continue to not go well for him.

People hate flag burners, hate protesters in general. I remember Governor Reagan rising in polls after student protests I participated in. Billionaires supporting dissenters may make this different but I doubt it. Scoundrels wrap themselves in the flag because it works.

Racism, xenophobia, patriotism won for Trump in November. What's changed?

Lesson to be learned: Don't EVER tell NFL owners who they should fire. Esp if you're a draft dodger who is criticizing someone else for a lack of patriotism.

Frum just got this one wrong. He's spot on most of the time, calling attention to Trump's lies, corruption, gaffs, treasonous behavior, and the behavior of the Republicans in Congress. But he misread this one.

He misunderstood that even though people don't feel the same as the kneelers, they don't really care much, they aren't burning the flag, and they're good football players (football being the #1 American sport). A person can support the flag AND support the players.

The other variable you missed out on is that divided teams lose and losing costs owners money.

The owners are going to band together and try to keep politics off the field while supporting their players.

Many examples of this already. Trump will get the message and go on even more untethered tweets and this will not be talking about this next week.

In the meantime more championship teams are opting out of going to the WH.
10. The more likely outcome, it seems to me . . .
Sun Sep 24, 2017, 03:03 PM
Sep 2017

. . . is that by next week's games (1) most people, including most NFL fans, will have largely forgotten about this week's Trump/kneeling "controversy"; (2) fewer NFL players will kneel during the anthem than this week, although many still will; and (3) except for a handful of deplorable crackpots, those who today profess that they would "stop watching" will turn their televisions back on and watch the games.

This is, after all, the same society that pretty much forgets about one hurricane the instant another one hits. All sides will have moved on by next Sunday to something else, whatever the "something else" happens to be.

45. Sure, the kneeling "protest" gesture will continue next week . . .
Sun Sep 24, 2017, 05:38 PM
Sep 2017

No doubt about that. But will people be tuning in to the start of games to see player reactions, etc.? Will "deplorable" NFL fans continue to stay away from watching? Will our deplorable President still be tweeting about it?

My guess is no. But come next week, we'll see what we'll see.

Likewise is his base. They are so easily distracted that they are willing to overlook the fact that he has failed on the rest of his agenda, i.e. building the Wall and making Mexico pay for it; repeal of the ACA; and likely, no tax cuts for the rich. The Tax Cut was supposed to be paid for by the repeal of the ACA. That doesn't seem like it's going to happen.

Also there was a program on MSNBC last night with Richard Engle that pretty much laid out the case that those coal miner jobs are never coming back. Solar heating has taken off with lightening speed and China and India have shifted all their efforts to producing cheaper and cheaper solar panels, and car batteries for electric cars which are progressing at full speed ahead, and manufacturers in this country are ceding that coal and fossel fuels are going the way of the dinosaur. They even mentioned that they have made the first electric bus, and it was built right here in my city in California.

Uh, no, Dave, Donnie stepped in doo doo up to his knees this time. Football is a bigger religion than he is, and he just suggested teams hamstring themselves by sending some of their best players off the field just because Donnie thinks he's being disrespected.

Hell, I think they should all kneel until Donnie is gone. That might get through to even more morons.

Independents, I hope, will see his tweeting for what it is, once again trying to change the subject by starting an argument because he has nothing else to offer his base. No repeal of the ACA, no border fence, and no tax cuts. If they're still listening to him, their Dotards as well.

The owners should fire all the protesting players. Then we can be done with this stupid game. Where will they find enough white players to field a team? Besides kneeling or being on one knee is not disrespectful.
