Both parties have too often used the VP slot as a political calculation to "balance out" a ticket or to shore up some voting bloc or electoral college votes. Too often actual qualifications were overlooked in the process. Both Obama and Hillary picked qualified persons to be their running mate. McCain's team reverted to classic political form and went for a wild card to shake up a race they feared they were losing. But Sarah Palin was no Dan Quayle - she was an overt danger to our Republic.

Mike Schmidt shows every indication of truly having learned a painful lesson over Palin.

as his running mate - but he soon realized he'd made a terrible mistake and, to his credit, admitted it and has been in effect atoning for it ever since.

Her early career actually had some good points. It only later became obvious how shallow she was. Still being shallow did not preclude the current occupant of the White House.
