Senators pitch Dream Act alternative

Senate lawmakers have created new legislation that would allow undocumented young immigrants to stay in the country when the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program expires.

GOP Sens. Thom Tillis and James Lankford introduced the Succeed Act as a conservative alternative to the Dream Act, which is a frontrunner to replace DACA, Axios reported. Sen. Orrin Hatch also signed on to the bill.

President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that he would be ending DACA and gave Congress six months to craft new legislation.

Under the Succeed Act, DACA recipients who have been in the U.S. since they were under the age of 16 would be eligible for protection under the Succeed Act. The legislation would give DACA recipients, or Dreamers, a 15-year path to citizenship.

Dreamers would be required to pass a background check, receive a high school diploma and pay off any back taxes to be protected under “conditional permanent residence” status, Axios reported. They would have to maintain that status for 10 years through college education, steady employment or military service, and would then be eligible for a green card.

After holding a green card for five years, young immigrants could apply for citizenship and could then sponsor their family members for permanent residency, Axios reported.

From the link

"
Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, said in a statement that the Succeed Act is “more of the same” from Republicans who want to criminalize immigrant communities.

“The bill calls for the extreme vetting of immigrants, and restricts family reunification and legal migration,” she said.“We’ve seen this all before and we’re not going to stand for it. We demand that a clean Dream Act is brought to the floor for a vote"

of natural American Citizens?

It should be graduate high school, then a two-year probationary period with a background check. If there is nothing worse than a traffic ticket on the record, they are clear to become a citizen. They must also be paid minimum wage as a citizen if they work during this period, and must file income tax.

If someone doesn't graduate or is older, perhaps two years in the national guard + background check.
