WH Scrambles to Show Trump Is Concerned About Puerto Rico.Guess someone finally told him that they are in fact US CITIZENS. Now he blames slow response because they are in the middle of the ocean. FFS!

(32,025 posts)I think most people know that. The airports were closed and put out of commission. Far, far different than TX or FL when a disaster occurs. The hurricanes in TX, FL and elsewhere in the U.S. did not destroy land travel to those areas which is the most efficient way of disaster relief. Also the states' power infrastructure is far more hardened against weather than PR.

(83,791 posts)Where were they? Why the tweeting delay. He does not give a damn...they are not white. He is also so stupid I doubt he realized they are US citizens as well. He had plenty of time to ridicule them about their debt, yet no time to send relief. Also read here today that 45 declared two bankruptcies on two golf courses there...33 million left to the tax payers to pay.

(83,791 posts)What federal officials visiting the island have found: 42 percent of Puerto Ricos population is without drinking water. Eighty percent of the islands electrical transmission system ― its substations and transmission lines ― and 100 percent of its distribution system was damaged by the storm, said Lt. Col. Jamie Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.
As of late Tuesday, 21 of Puerto Ricos 69 hospitals had some functionality. The remaining 48 hospitals had an unknown status, Davis said.

(51,308 posts)Those are huge cargo planes.
That should be going on around the clock. Perhaps it is.
sheshe2
(83,791 posts)He said there was only one plane the whole day that landed to pick up evacuees. One. The lines are huge and one plane came in. Perhaps Don is now blocking US citizens refugee status. They are not white after all.

(4,266 posts)Puerto Rico does not have any ports deep enough to allow them to dock. One is under construction, but you obviously need more than that at this point.
sheshe2
(83,791 posts)I am sure they have recovery boats that can pick up those that are dying and wounded. Cruise ships don't dock...they have shuttles.
Ilsa
(61,695 posts)take 5 days to get there, so 9 days away.
sheshe2
(83,791 posts)And sarge responded to me that it would take them two days to build the ramps for docking...the hurricane struck on the 20th. Our Nero twittled and an island of 3.5 million are dying.
Mr.Bill
(24,303 posts)If the port has a big enough pier to handle them. I think San Juan does.
Grammy23
(5,810 posts)During a Q and A session about cruising, someone asked about the situation in Puerto Rico. They were told that Carnival had two ships loaded with water and supplies en route to Puerto Rico. Normally, that would be a normal stop for some of their cruises but since that won't be happening for some time, they have the ships to use for helping in the disaster. I would imagine other cruise lines may be doing something similar. I hope so!
Mr.Bill
(24,303 posts)It makes sense, because usually cruise lines are heavily invested in businesses in the ports they visit. They have employees and a large interest in the well being of places like San Juan.
Grammy23
(5,810 posts)And many of the people who live there are dependent on the tourists for their livelihood. The cruise lines can be helpful in saving lives, as well as try to get business back up and running for everyone. I am sure Puerto Rico will be unable to sustain tourism for some time but I am hopeful the companies that do business there will try to help any way they can.

(13,776 posts)using transport (helicopters) for transport to and from land. It's how they operate in many other zones where they have been sent. No reason they can't do the same in Puerto Rico.
The WH is just making bad excuses.
Grins
(7,218 posts)They can shuttle people to the Comfort and the Mercy. But the port itself: Send in the SeaBees.
This is among the things they can do. Quickly.
And Navy Commanders would love it as it is a real-life training exercise.

(28,941 posts)We also have the Seabees and the Red Horse teams. They build stuff and they build it in a hurry. I'll take that back. Hurry is their default; needs be and they have it built yesterday. They can do it under combat conditions and in waste lands.
Now Dolt boasts about being CinC. All he has to do is give the order and shit gets done.
sheshe2
(83,791 posts)I knew they had to be equipped for a rescue without docking.
Thank you. I weep for those stranded.
sarge43
(28,941 posts)The Seabees and Red Horse could have docking facilities up and running in a couple of days. Wouldn't be fancy, but it would do the job. Those guys are itching to strut their stuff; get them over there.
The Seabees' motto: The difficult we do right now; the impossible will take a little longer. The other military construction teams are the same.
sheshe2
(83,791 posts)Thanks for the additional information, sarge. So glad they are ready and willing. Go Navy!
Another question. I just read that it will take the ships 5 days to reach their destination then you say another two to make the docking facilities. That will make it 14 days total with little aid. 45 waited 6 days to even bother to respond other than a few FEMA on the ground. How many are going to die, sarge? This is devastating. There are 3.5 million American citizens waiting for their country to aid them. The President failed them. Guess it is up to you guys now.
Thank you for all that you do.
sarge43
(28,941 posts)Personnel and equipment can be shuttled in. Further, Red Horse (Air Force) builds air fields the way honey bees build hives; it's their go to.
No, there won't be miracles. However, we must concentrate on what can be done instead of what can't be.
I'm not on active duty; haven't been for awhile. Just saying service personnel are mission focused. Give them a goal and they figure out how to achieve it.
I'll join you in that thanks.

(83,791 posts)As the devastation from Hurricane Maria became more apparent Sunday, former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton implored President Trump and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to help the people of Puerto Rico. Send the Navy, she tweeted, especially the hospital ship USNS Comfort.

Then it took them two more days to deploy while 45 went on with his drunk tweeting.
