Ah yes, the good old days...
President Obama took the First Lady to a play in New York in May 2009. The Right Wing Noise Machine (Drudge, Limbaugh, Fox, Murdoch's newspapers) wen't absolutely BAT-SHIT over this appalling WASTE OF MONEY. (I have to admit, even though I strongly supported Obama, I found it pretty hard to defend that one.)
And now, what does the famous Right Wing Noise Machine say about a President that flies to New York EVERY WEEK? ---crickets--- They're saying about as much as they say about Trump's gang using private email servers.
Example of the hypocritical outrage: disgusting, human jellyfish Charles Hurt pens an op/ed for The New York Post.

"Taxpayers footed the bill for the big night on the town, which included orchestra seat tickets at $96.50 apiece, and at least $24,000 for each of three aircraft including two smaller aircraft for White House staff and reporters used for the trip, sources said.
Obamas jet, a fancy Gulfstream 500, served as a more modest Air Force One for the day in place of the customary presidential 747.
The NYPD refused to divulge the cost of providing security and the White House declined to say how much the trip was costing taxpayers.
Even before the smaller jet left Washington, the there-and-back trip drew criticism from the Republican National Committee, which questioned the presidents decision to travel to New York for a night of entertainment during a recession and while the nations automakers struggle to survive.
It was just a few months ago that auto execs were roundly criticized when they traveled to Washington for congressional hearings in pricey private jets, noted the RNC, which issued a news release chastising Obama for saying he understands Americans troubles but then hopping up to New York for a night on the town."

(52,253 posts)well, i rather expect the grifter-in-chief *is* traveling purely for personal reasons, but i'm thinking of actual, reasonable presidents.
my theory is that if it seems to be a purely personal trip, it's because they can't tell about what else is involved.
i further suspect that republicans knew this in obama's case, end cynically took political advantage, knowing full well that they were in the wrong, but that obama couldn't respond with the truth.
