Is it me, or do police unions seem to be the common denominator for a lot of Trump's excesses?
I know they've been fairly conservative in recent years, but that lean seems to have gone into hyperdrive under Trump. I've read a bit about the whole "constitutional sheriffs movement," which is downright scary, and also seems to explain Trump's love affair with Joe Arpaio and David Clarke.
Police unions were among the earliest of Trump's endorsers, and many (if not most) of his rallies include their members right behind him. And this goes way back with Trump, at least to his smear campaign of the Central Park Five, if not earlier.
I've been thinking about this more and more in light of his NFL obsession. And police unions were calling for boycotts of NFL games long before Trump noticed. In fact, I seem to remember that Cleveland police officers threatened to stop moonlighting as security guards at Browns games because players were kneeling during the anthem. And going back further, I remember that Florida police unions called for a boycott of Beyoncé because one of her videos included words along the lines of "stop shooting us."
Am I off the mark here, or is this a real problem?
