Alabama is mostly rural. There are only 5 urban places, pop. 250 K each, Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and next to Georgia, Gadsden metro area.
So how the election stacked up is very telling.
Crazy Roy Moore won 55%, all the counties in red.....
Strange had the urban vote, in orange.

(13,871 posts)I actually don't see this as bad. Dems have a better shot to pull off the upset against Moore, and if Moore does win it gives another loony racist for the independent voters to have swallow in order to vote GOP.

(60,010 posts)The problem with Ala, and Ga and Miss. and etc is that the majority rural counties are very very conservative, both politically and religiously.
who are not gonna vote for a dem.

(8,760 posts)I haven't been to Alabama in decades.....but Moore doesn't seem much different from what I have here in Texas. at least from a practical standpoint.

(13,871 posts)but would still be hard for Jesus (Dem) to beat Pontious Pilate (Rep) in Alabama.
Good news is that In every southern state the strongest Dem group is under 25 and the stroingest Rep is over 65. An old saying in SC is that time and funerals are the only way to change politics here.

(24,565 posts)I looked at a map of the 2016 Presidential results in AL and you had a pretty decent blue streak running from border to border through Montgomery + an area around Birmingham. Any chance that will expand?

(60,010 posts)Not under Trump, and his open support for racism.
Montgomery and Birmingham have strong liberal enclaves, as does Huntsville, while Mobile is still very conservative as are all the rural counties, which are poor, under-educated, uniformly fundy in religion.
What bothers me is this primary result shows the majority going for a certifiable goon.
the "saner" urban areas chose a lesser evil, actually.
but Trump's endorsement did him no good at all.
We just went backwards by about 50 years.

(60,010 posts)Bless his heart for running, and of course we will vote for him. and he will carry the same orange map areas.
Our only hope is Moore somehow shoots himself in the foot between now and Dec. election.
There is actually a good change of him doing that.

(13,871 posts)An Obama 2008 level of turnout from young and minority voters; and a lot of center right GOP voters not willing to vote for someone who says the Constitution is secondary to (his) Bible.
