Right now on Martin Bashir's show, they're talking about how Romney, when he was in Salt Lake City, outsourced the uniforms to Burma a country known for its "abysmal human rights."

(28,885 posts)AFAIK, Roms isn't responsible for anything.
I know, we need a new bumper sticker:

(3,589 posts)Even better.... he's going to have them made in the US and make them retroactive to 2002.

(22,308 posts)but honestly, this country no longer has a textile industry.
I hate that this was outsourced too but you have about as much chance of buying clothes made in America as you have of buying bananas grown here.

(78,249 posts)from Hawai'i, of course. People even have banana trees in their yards! Varieties with fanciful names like "apple" and "ice cream" are much tastier than the imported Cavendish.
eta: Don't look for them on the mainland, though. Hawai'i produce is subject to more stringent standards regarding fruit flies, etc. than imports!
A few textile firms still eke out an existence on these shores, notably American Apparel in L.A.
But the real reason this is important is that, of all the countries in the world that do have thriving textile industries, Rmoney chose the one run by a repressive military dictatorship that imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi for years.

(59 posts)Our neighborhood is festooned with the most delicious bananas around. Just love da 'kin apple bananas. Cute little bugga's, and not a banana spider to be found.
Yes, I know, this is all somewhat beside the point about textiles.

(3,915 posts)THis is about the torch bearer's uniforms. They could be made anywhere. He chose one of the nastiest places on Earth.

(3,059 posts)Clothing Made in America. You'll be amazed at what comes up.
But, besides the inherent problem of having our Olympians' uniforms made in China, did you see what those uniforms COST? The damn blazer alone is over $600! I saw where the man's uniform comes in at around $1000, the woman's a couple hundred or so less. Seriously? We keep hearing that it cost too much to have stuff made here, so they went with what is probably fairly shoddy quality and STILL paid a ridiculous price for it.

(153,223 posts)people say NOTHING CAN BE DONE and THAT'S HOW IT IS as if they have no power at all - I too look for MADE IN AMERICA
^snip^
There was a time when the industry was the biggest employer in the city. Not anymore, because, as the film relates in a series of blunt statistics, in a few short generations we have gone from a country whose collective wardrobe was almost entirely American-made to one in which just 5 percent of the clothes we wear are manufactured in the United States.
http://rankingamerica.wordpress.com/2011/02/25/the-u-s-ranks-4th-in-banana-production/
^snip^
According to FAOStat.org in 2008, the U.S. produced 3% of the worlds bananas. In addition to Cuba, Cypress, Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel, the United States ranks fourth out of ten countries. Turkey ranks first, with a banana production rate of 6%.
I stand by my statement. The odds are similar. I didn't say it was impossible, and was trying to point out the problem with the fact that our textile industry has all but vanished.

(8,652 posts)to buy "made in America".
I represent a union in Boston in which employees must wear uniforms as a condition of employment. The company must buy union made in America, according to our agreement.
It's "King Louie" brand shirts.
If you work at it hard enough, it can get done.
So, the uniforms at a little racetrack in Boston are "made in America" but our Olympians uniforms are too hard to get.
I repeat,
THAT'S BULLSHIT
Motown_Johnny
(22,308 posts)simply because almost everything I own for clothing is not made here.
If I said that I would be a hypocrite.

(1,020 posts)they got word that Romeny outsourced uniforms to Burma. Like clockwork, none of them would answer the question "is it wrong" the following Sunday.
