I will give you everything, Donald Trump promised as a presidential candidate, and as president, not only has he continued to make that promise, but also the entire Republican Party has followed suit. Of course, they cant actually deliver everything.
But this has become their guiding principle: that governing does not actually require making difficult choices, or when it does, one should just pretend that it doesnt.
Thats one key message from the nine-page document that the Trump administration released today outlining the tax cuts it wants Congress to pass. The message in the plan itself and in the arguments they are using to justify it is that there are no choices to be made. We can have it all cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy, which will shower great jobs on the rabble, which will not only not increase the deficit, it will cut it because so much new revenue will pour in.
If all that were actually true, it certainly would be terrific. But it isnt.
We saw this same scenario play out on health care. The various Republican plans involved brutal cuts to Medicaid and insurance subsidies, the consequence of which would be that tens of millions would lose coverage, not to mention the removal of many of the Affordable Care Acts vital consumer protections. But when they were questioned about these consequences, theyd say, No no! Nobody will lose coverage! Everything will be cheaper and better! And well protect people with preexisting conditions! The supposedly serious people in the party made essentially the same argument that Trump did when he promised, Were going to have insurance for everybody.
But it wasnt true. And neither is it true that a bunch of tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy will create spectacular economic growth Trump claimed yesterday that his plan will push growth to 6 percent, which no sane person thinks will happen and itll all pay for itself because revenues will begin pouring in.................................

(15,805 posts)I've read articles that report the cost varies from $750,000 BILLION to over a TRILLION dollars. Where is the offsets? More supply side sleight of hand where benevolent billionaires take pity on the poor plebs and offer them well paying jobs with fabulous benefits and then like magic, the economy soars to unbelievable new highs?
Somebody must be smokin' something good to fall for that tired old ruse rgain.

(20,851 posts)My taxes will go through the roof. They're not saving the mortgage deduction for most people. If you itemize to get it, there is no longer a personal exemption so you lose all the standard deduction. Plus state and local taxes aren't deducted which means whose mortgage is going to come close to their standard deduction? Meaning deducting your mortgage makes little to any sense for anyone that isn't owning a very expensive house. I.E. its a write off only for the wealthy. Meanwhile those who own homes in high tax states, will lose all their deductions. Every breakdown I saw showed small savings for the poor, and a strong increase for the middle class. On top of that, you're likely to see housing prices crash without the mortgage deduction. It's a lose, lose for the middle class.
