Available soon: Sex robots with artificial intelligence

Come January, lifelike sex robots will be one step closer. That’s when a Southern California company will unveil Harmony, an anatomically correct sex doll with a patented animatronic talking head with programmable personality and memory.

News of creator Matt McMullen’s latest invention — he’s been making lifelike silicone sex dolls for 20 years — has created international media interest and a firestorm of criticism from ethicists and futurists who see a dark side to a sex doll that becomes more “human” with each technological innovation.

One critic worries that the doll’s artificial intelligence app could be hacked to make it kill its owner (like the vengeance meted out by sex robots in the film “Ex Machina” and TV show “Westworld”). And women’s advocates say owners could realistically rehearse plans for violent sexual acts with the interactive dolls.

But McMullen, the chief executive and creative director of Realbotix, a subsidiary of his San Diego County doll-making factory Abyss Creations, said critics of Harmony have it all wrong.

Did you ever see Spielberg's "AI"? I think it was originally a Kubrick film but Spielberg finished it.

It's a heartbreaking story about an artificially intelligent little boy who wants to be a real boy. This Pinocchio-like story takes many twists and turns as the boy searches to discover himself. In one sequence, Jude Law plays a gigolo-robot-for-hire!

The ending is both heartening and depressing but the film is provocative and worth watching.

they really fear is men and women not needing each other any more.

This is the real Orgasmatron-- sexual satisfaction and perfectly programmed cuddling. Never again complain about toilet seats or what movie to watch.

Eventually, we will evolve into one sex, with pregnancy and childbirth done in a lab setting and we all have our perfect companions.

Wasn't there a Twilight Zone about this?

We could put men on the east coast and women on the west...and never the twain shall meet!

Soon the sexes won't particularly need each other to have families. This could either be good or bad, depending on your perspective. The person you want most to have sex with can be a bad choice for marriage. One day, we could have married couples who don't necessarily have to have children together. The man has children with his idealized mate using eggs created from skin cells, the woman from artificially created sperm. Or we've advanced in gene editing to the point where children are custom made. Or hell, some kids might have robot moms who are programmed to be perfect at raising children, and vice versa for single women and perfect stay-at-home husband robots.

The future is actually quite exciting. People will ultimately be the masters of their own lives and get whatever they want out of it.

I have a difficult time believing there are a statistically significant number of men who would go for this.

Right. Playboy was all about the articles, too. OF course.

If this doesn't prove, once and for all, that men consider women their sexual property, nothing else will.

What kind of loser would want to even consider this????
