Jersey City protesters: 'Americans are dying while Trump plays golf'

JERSEY CITY - Protesters may not have been able to get close enough to Liberty National Golf Course, but about a dozen people wanted to share a message with hundreds of people headed to the Statue of Liberty Sunday afternoon.

"Americans are dying while Trump plays golf," protesters chanted at Liberty State Park.

President Donald Trump was in Jersey City on Sunday for the Presidents Cup. Of the protesters, many were critical of Trump's response to the devastation left by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico saying the president should shift his focus to aiding victims rather than attending a sporting event.

Roger Martin attended the small protest holding a Puerto Rico flag. He said he has family members who live on the island - a U.S. territory - and said Trump's lack of response shows he is treating the people of Puerto Rico like "second class citizens."

"I feel like Trump's out here playing golf and he hasn't visited Puerto Rico nearly as fast as Texas," Martin said.
