(1,058 posts)In an automatic weapon, more than 1 round will be fired every time you hold the trigger.
In a semi-automatic weapon, one round is fired when you pull the trigger one time.

(34,183 posts)Full-auto requires the trigger to be depressed for a sustained rate of fire (until you run out of ammo).
With full-auto, when you let off on the trigger the firearms is no longer firing off bullets.

(82,849 posts)Automatic: Pull and hold the trigger, and bullets will fly until you run out of bullets.

(62,444 posts)Automatic - you squeeze the trigger and bullets come flying out one after the other. Normally what people mean by a "machine gun". These were generally "banned" a long time ago. You can get them, but there are a number of hoops you have to jump through, and they are not simple ones.
Semi-Automatic - one bullet comes out each time you squeeze the trigger.

(33,616 posts)you can keep pulling the trigger and the gun will fire without the need to cock it. One bullet at a time.
Automatic, one pull of the trigger and you get a burst of bullets. Think machine gun type of firing.

(58,713 posts)An "automatic" weapon will continue to fire if you hold the trigger down, until the trigger is released or the magazine in emptied.
A "semi-automatic" will fire one round every time you pull the trigger, and automatically loads another round in the chamber.
There are weapons you can set to fire short bursts, say 3 rounds each time you pull the trigger.
Other than that, there are bolt action and lever action, where the shooter needs to operate a mechanism to load the next round.

(13,815 posts)you can fire many rounds in a matter of seconds. Automatic- you control how many rounds that you fire off.

(39,343 posts)You cannot really control the number during full auto. Some machine guns do have a 3-burst selection. Then each time you pull the trigger three rounds are fired.

(11,744 posts)However, in a semi automatic firearm, you have to pull the trigger for each shot while with a fully automatic firearm, as long as you keep the trigger pulled, the gun will fire.
There is LESS control with a fully automatic gun and they are used primarily in the military for fire superiority meaning that you fire in fully automatic, not necessarily to hit every target, but to keep the other side from firing back while your side maneuvers. US military battle rifles have a selector switch which lets the soldier select one shot, full automatic firing, and a 3 round burst which provides higher volume of fire and some control.

(4,149 posts)Full auto can shoot until the clip is empty with one pull on the trigger (although, military M16s would shoot 3-round burst on full auto because accuracy decreased greatly as more shots were fired). Supposedly, the only people who can legally own or sell weapons with full auto capability have to have an FFL (federal Firearms License). However, many semi-autos can be converted to full-auto with cheaply available parts.

to be arguing about it, that and the type of bullets.
