"Don't politicize the Vegas shootings by raising gun issues!"

I'm seeing that on other discussion forums from Republican members. They're going after posters who dare to raise the gun culture in America and the issue of access to semi-auto and automatic weapons.

Many of these same angry right-wing posters spent last night speculating how this latest shooting was, without a doubt, the work of terrorists and the need to keep Muslims out of the country. Really? Politicize much? Just when you see it fitting your narrative, apparently.

The problem with their stance is evn if the Vegas shooter did turn out to be Muslim it still doesn't justify barring the immigration of all Muslims. And it doesn't address how to treat of the 3 million Muslims already in America, another million in Canada, the vast majority living peacefully and contributing members of society. I swear some right-wingers want them all deported. They rarely say as much now, but you know the day is coming when they continue with their reactionary responses to acts of terrorism (Edmonton and Paris as recent examples).

Despite all that, condolences to the families who lost loved ones in Vegas, Edmonton and Paris, and best wishes to those fighting for their lives!

"It isn't a good time to discuss Climate Change" after the terrible record breaking hurricanes. "This isn't a good time to discuss gun policy" will be the GOP stance, especially since they can't blame it on Muslim terrorists as they would have loved to do.

"Now" is NEVER a good time to discuss anything problematic (aka anything that might upset or threaten their donors/lobbyists). So what if a few hundred people die and/or injured. It's not like there's anything we could have done to prevent it from happening, amirite? /s

They have been trying their damnedest to pin this on Muslims.

It has been said that the guy is a recent convert to Islam?! How the hell does a retiree in Mesquite NV get brainwashed into that? Mesquite is closer to the Bundy criminal bunch than Las Vegas!

Everything is political that involves people and the rules we live by. It can be social, economic, cultural, etc... but it is also political.

A hurricane is not political in and of itself, but how we prepare for them, what factors (climate change) contribute to their size and the ability of the environment to handle them, and how we respond to them are all political. Those are a matter of policy, or the decisions that people make to empower their government to do things or not to.

Similarly, these shootings are political events. I am not saying that the shooter was motivated by politics or that politics was a driver, but as you stated, not just the gun culture but the culture in general that promotes quick and dramatic solutions to your problems. A revolutionary new pill that blocks fat and sheds pounds, a new diet or gadget that works out for you and gives you that six pack you want but aren't willing to spend hours exercising and eating well to get, a gun that will let you fend off hordes of "looters" and bad guys with a 30 or 50 round magazine, and I say this as a person who grew up around guns and owns them. The culture of violence and the gun culture in this country are disturbing to me. The way that the right wingers respond to these events also really infuriates me. They always appeal to emotion, to grief, to tragedy, not to find solutions to problems, but to maintain or advance their political stances. They tell people not to politicize while they are defending a political stance and yet the hypocrisy of their actions never seems to even give them one second of pause.

This mass killing is a political event and we as the people do need to discuss everything related to the event from the motives, to the means, and how to best prevent and mitigate future events.
