Watch out for copycat shootings for the next

couple of weeks or a month. The publicity for the Vegas shooting is likely to awaken the ambitions of others who are nursing a desire to go out in a big way. It may not happen, but certainly could. I, for one, am going to avoid large public gatherings for a while. Copycats do sometimes turn up after a major shooting event that dominates the news.

I think we should identify the shooter as "shooter 45" or something similar. redstatebluegirl Oct 2017 #1

We should not show a picture of him or her. Don't glorify this violence.

when stuff like this happens. Whether there is a focus on the shooter or not, the publicity itself tends to stimulate curiosity and interest in all kinds of people, from DUers to nutcase right-wingers and from people who are frightened out of their minds to others who are of a mindset to do something similar to become famous, albeit posthumously.

There's no way to stop the news. So, we have to look at the news and see what else we should look for.

On any given day, there are people who have ideation about taking lives and going out in a blaze of glory. How many? I have no idea, but in a nation of 315 million or so, it's probably not an inconsequential number.

On any given day, most of those people do not act on their ideas, thank goodness. However, when a major mass murder or shooting event happens, it's likely that it might encourage someone else to either follow the pattern or follow whatever plan is in his or her head. The publicity given to such events is a powerful thing, that can either lead to sadness, fear, loathing, disgust or, in some cases, a desire to go ahead and take action to gain the same publicity.

I hope this does not happen, and it's unlikely to happen on the scale of Las Vegas, but I'm sure there are people who are "inspired" by what happened and are considering their own actions. With luck, they will not, but I'm going to avoid being in public crowds for a while, anyhow.

Just look at the spate of incidents where someone has driven a vehicle into a crowd recently.

The massacre in Las Vegas has made me decide not to go.

It's no longer if, it's where, and it's all the time. Japan is probably one of the safest country.

Some asshole terrorist drives a truck into a crowd and we have a spate of similar incidents shortly thereafter. Like spawns like, it seems, when it comes to destructive, murderous actions.

The guy in Vegas went out in a big way. Sadly, others might try to do the same or even more.

Was looking from another angle, that's all. You're right. Absolutely. I'm feeling especially hopeless is all. Country is fucked.
