Price of First-Class Stamp to Hit 50 Cents

The U.S. Postal Service said it would raise stamp prices and other shipping rates next year, shortly after warning of a dwindling cash cushion and skipping payments into a retiree fund for the fifth straight year.

The agency on Friday proposed raising the price of a first-class stamp by a penny to 50 cents. The agency also proposed a 3.9% increase for shipping items like packages, a product line where it can raise prices at market rates. The price increases, which need approval of the Postal Regulatory Commission, would take effect Jan. 21, 2018.

The quasigovernmental agency’s financial situation has grown more precarious as mail volume has dropped. The agency hasn’t made federally mandated payments to retirees’ pension and health-care accounts since fiscal 2012, totaling roughly $40 billion. It skipped a $6.9 billion payment to retiree plans last week.

“It is in the public interest for the Postal Service to default on these payment obligations in order to mitigate the risk of running out of cash,” Postmaster General Megan Brennan said in a letter to Congress last week.

The agency only has enough cash to fund 38 days of operating expenses, she wrote on Sept. 27, less than a quarter of what outside advisers say is needed for a sound financial cushion.

The year started off with high hopes for postal reform legislation. A House bill that would have shifted retirees to Medicare and changed the funding schedule for some retirement benefits, among other changes, has stalled. Last week, Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform committee, called on House Speaker Paul Ryan to call a vote on the bill. A spokesman for Mr. Ryan didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The Postal Service is also hoping for a favorable review of current price restrictions by agency that oversees it, the Postal Regulatory Service, that would allow price increases beyond the current cap.

As of now, the Postal Service says any price increase it imposes could face court challenges because the agency’s Board of Governors currently doesn’t have any standing members. The last remaining governor’s term ended in December.

I am surprised that the WSJ is the only place where I can find the story. Also, I used to hate the junk mail, now I welcome it, realizing that this is what helps keeps the agency solvent. Somehow..

The US postal service is just one more thing that was deliberately sabotaged (in 2006) by filthy republicon devils.

I've never really hated junk mail, it used to go straight into the trash can now it goes into the recycle bin. What I despise are the damn junk phone calls. Which has nothing to do with the post office, of course, it's just annoying as hell.

Our postal service is a remarkable bargain, especially when you consider that mail is delivered to every nook and cranny of this country.

since private services wouldn't find it profitable to deliver there.

... USPS must fund their retirement fund 50 years into the future?
That's why they are always in debt.

And that's the excuse the GOP uses to say "We must privatize the mail service".

They are literally required to fund the pensions of people who are not even born yet.

Many coin and stamp shops will sell older, uncancelled stamps for much less than face, if you don’t mind licking and sticking multiple stamps.

I use them now and it is fun to find all the combinations to get to 50 cents...and yes it’s perfectly legal to use old uncancelled stamps.

"Your first class mail would be returned to sender."
With modern technology, if you don't order online there is no need for the post office.
Bottom line, you can only stop the mail for thirty days.

Your first class mail would be returned to sender marked undeliverable. Second class mail would be destroyed, with a notice sent to the publisher that your address is not valid. Junk mail would be destroyed or returned to sender, depending on the sender's directions.

But the Postal Commission refused to approve the raise. The requirement to refund retirement out 50 years along with the refusal to raise postage rates is designed to undermine it so Repugs and their wealthy corporatists can privatize it.

Just one. A postcard to Aunt Millie, a letter to a friend...anything, the fiscal concerns of the Postal Service would be over in a month

And BTW, if you want to avoid the next inevitable increase, just buy a shitload of “Forever” stamps now

13. The USPS has over 500,000 career employees, is involved in over 47% or the world's mail,

delivers to every address in the USA. While much of what the Post Office delivers is so-called 'junk mail', it also delivers magazines, things like credit cards, bills, etc. While I pay most of my bills online, I still have to actually mail a check for a few local bills. The USPS also delivers a large percentage of material ordered on-line. (Most of our orders from Amazon, Chewy, and others come via USPS).

So, if the Post Office folds, it would be a disaster. Not only throwing half a million people out of work, but putting a real hurt on all of the on-line retailers. As near as I can determine, the cheapest UPS package/letter (Lowest rate is based on 1 lb, nothing less) is around $9.00. Bear in mind that is from pouring through 100 pg plus 'rate guide'. The minimum postal rate for a letter is going to $.50. But tell me again how private business can do it better.

I have also noticed that often UPS or FedEx will start the shipping of a package and then turn the package over to the USPS for the actual home delivery.

But we all know that the gov't is full of fraud, waste and abuse, right?

15. Didn't the USPS become a Koch target
Sun Oct 8, 2017, 12:49 AM
Oct 2017

when under Jimmy Carter they announced their plan to convert those hundreds of thousands of PO delivery trucks to natural gas or some non-petroleum fuel? Ever since then, the Repugs on the take from the Kochs have been obsessed in running it into the ground.

And with the postal workers unionized, the Repugs are really out to shut them down. The idea that the USPS has to pre-fund 75 years of pensions is outrageous. And it never got much public exposure at all from our supposed "liberal" media. I try to explain to people this is like you having a 30 year mortgage and suddenly the big bad Repugs decide you have to pre-oay it.......only the USPS has to pay over twice as much with 75 years worth! As annoying as it is, I still get paper bills mailed to me just to help support the USPS and its workers. Crazy, I know!

As another posted said, if we all just mailed something once a week, it would keep them afloat.

so we could exchange mailing addresses, we could agree to sending/receiving 1 pc. of mail weekly. I dont know how many we are, but it wouldn't hurt to try. We can also post to our FB friends and get it going there.

Better or additional ideas?
