Restaurant owners apologize and threaten to close after backlash over angry, pro-Trump Facebook post

DAVID FERGUSON at Raw Story

https://www.rawstory.com/2017/10/restaurant-owners-apologize-and-threaten-to-close-after-backlash-over-angry-pro-trump-facebook-post/

"SNIP............

A pair of restaurant owners in Tucson, AZ issued an apology after they posted an angry, pro-Trump post on Facebook that sparked a ferocious backlash and resulted in the departure of one of their business partners.

Tucson.com reported that Christopher Smith and Jay Warren — the owners of Cup it Up American Grill — issued a public statement that said, in part, “Our decision to bring our personal political beliefs into a business forum is regretful, and for this we apologize to all.”

If You Only News said on Saturday that Cup it Up’s Facebook post proclaimed, “We believe in and support 100 percent the following,” with a list including, “OUR PRESIDENT — Donald J. Trump,” “Always Standing for the National Anthem,” “Repealing Obama Care,” “Drug screening for welfare recipients” and “In God We Trust.”

A second list asserted, “We DON’T believe in or support the following,” and included, “Those that DON’T respect our President, Armed Forces and First Responders,” “Kneeling for the National Anthem,” “ANTIFA,” “Fake News” and “Global Warming.”

Give the state of the state.............why threaten your business with this?

I almost feel sorry for them, but if they posted that I wouldn't go there. It's just that simple. I try to take my money to reputable places, with folks who are at least a little like-minded.

I'm just shaking my head. People should just keep their politics quiet if they want their business to thrive.

and replying only to the idea of living in a place with one point of view.

I worked in very rural communities in North FL - that reflected 'deep bible belt' ideology. I'm sure there were liberals somewhere - and atheists - and others. But the overwhelming bent was baptist and conservative. Before every holiday meal, we were all expected to stand and take hands, because the preacher would lead us in prayer (I worked in a public prison).

I actually liked the people I worked with - but over time it got tiring. And even slightly abusive (for my daughter - in school).

Besides, I wanted to be paid fairly (and in those jobs, I wasn't).

I've never been thought of as epic
I was just answering quickly about living in a place with one opinion. I did, for about 20 years. But it was restricted to that - living in a place with an overarching opinion (though there was some diversity, I'm also sure of that!)

I liked the people I worked with, by the way, and we got along fine. A few I considered good friends. But it had a very clear bias (as do I - people are people, of course. And for me it was very hard.

Anyway, I was just answering quickly to one part of the comment, not the rest.

I determined decades ago that my business interests are not served by my sharing any of my political or social opinions. I remain true to my beliefs in the decisions I make over whether to accept a client or not -- if their company's mission runs counter to my core beliefs, I pass on working with them.

And given the tenor of the times, when even the least innocuous opinion can be misinterpreted, I too don't understand why anyone would run such a silly risk, or worse, align themselves solidly with what is an incredibly divisive administration, especially when their business (a restaurant) is so dependent on word-of-mouth.

Could it be the owners' response?

It’s hate feedback and it’s for one reason only and it’s that we showed our support for Donald Trump,” he complained. “There was nothing that we put in the post that was absolutely wrong and terrible in that we supported our president and our troops.”

“These types of comments have no place regardless of anyone’s political beliefs,” the owners’ statement read. “We assumed there would be some discussion and shares, but never this type of animosity and hostility.”

May I suggest they change the name of their restaurant to: Cup It Up Morans

Samples:
"There has been a lot of negative press on this business with regards to politics but let me say that this rating isn't about that. The press just reminded me to write a review. I visited recently and the food is just awful. Period. I wouldn't waste your time going here in light of so many other places."

"Food in a cup. What a terrible idea.
However, it's not the only terrible idea they've had. Two of the three owners decided it would be a good idea to post their Trump-supporting political views on Facebook whilst calling out those who disagree. The irony is that they are serving cups of kale and quinoa in a mostly liberal part of Tucson. The hypocrisy is that they have exercised their First Amendment rights while denigrating others for exercising theirs (namely the NFL, celebrity "experts" and late night talk show hosts).
Cup It Up, your willingness (or lack thereof) to be a part of the community is just as important as the food you serve. I will abide by your wishes and not spend my liberal money at your establishment. And as you requested, I will encourage likeminded people to do the same."
