Born in Brooklyn to Irish parents, Dr. Jane OMeara Sanders is a founding member of the Sanders Institute, a fellowship comprised of leaders dedicated to transforming democracy through the research, education, outreach and advancement of bold, progressive ideas and values. Dr. OMeara Sanders was also at the centre of the 2016 American presidential election as senior political advisor to, and wife of, Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders.
In conversation with Joseph OConnor, award winning novelist and Frank McCourt Chair of Creative Writing in UL, Dr. OMeara Sanders will discuss the 2016 Presidential election, the Sanders campaign and Institute, the Republican and Democratic rivals faced, and the current political climate in America. She will discuss as well her own Irish heritage, her upbringing in 1950s Brooklyn in an Irish-American home, and the influence of Irish art, music and literature on her life. Finally, she will tell her and Bernie Sanders shared story, having grown up just blocks from each other in Brooklyn, but who first met decades later as political candidate and activist in Vermont.

Incidentally, you might recall his mother Victoria of GWB administration fame. http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/news/politics/2017/07/10/brady-toensing-vermonts-republican-provocateur/437431001/

(108,994 posts)That was the decision of the US attorney. He decided that Tonesing's complaint was worth following up on, apparently after speaking to the donors about the discrepancies in their stated donations.

(59,504 posts)the very Democratic former Secretary of State. As many of us said then, an investigation does not mean guilt. Not to mention, the main donor was someone with a relationship with Christine Plunkett, who was the CFO and later the President. That situation is not totally clear as she was giving annual checks and then stopped doing so. It may well be she changed her mind - something you can do, even if you made a pledge.

(108,994 posts)And there were several other donors with concerns.
You're right that an investigation doesn't mean guilt, and maybe the case will be dropped. There seems to be good reason for having an investigation, though, since bank fraud is a serious crime and these donations are being questioned.

(1,473 posts)Toensing wrote a letter about the defaulted Catholic Church's loan. That's not being investigated.
The investigation regarding the defaulted People's Bank loan had already begun in the FDIC OIG.

(59,504 posts)The article did not say that. It simply referred to the suit as politically motivated. In fact, consider who started it - Brady Toensing, a name you might know if you are really from Vermont. http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/news/politics/2017/07/10/brady-toensing-vermonts-republican-provocateur/437431001/

(1,473 posts)Brady Toensing wrote about the private loan with the Catholic Church. There is no lawsuit, nor investigation of that defaulted loan.
The FDIC is investigating the defaulted People's Bank loan. About 18 months now, with grand jury convened.

Three of these discrepancies were related to gifts given by Trustees.

There is a lot of detail in that article.
It looks like the investigation is proceeding carefully and discreetly.
