Please help me to understand what constitutes patriotism regarding the national anthem
Well, at least as far as the deplorable mind is concerned.
A football player who kneels in silent, peaceful protest (as is his right as an American citizen) during the national anthem is considered a treasonous scumbag.
A baseball player who stands during the national anthem and scratches his balls, spits, and picks his ass while its playing is considered a true American patriot and role model.
Is that about the size of it?
