Las Vegas gunman shot security guard minutes before massacre, police say

By Mark Berman October 9 at 7:34 PM

Authorities investigating the Las Vegas massacre on Monday expressed irritation that after eight days, they have still not determined why a gunman opened fire on concertgoers, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

“I’m frustrated,” Joseph Lombardo, the Las Vegas sheriff, said at a news briefing. “Because this individual purposefully hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is difficult for us to find answers for those actions.”

During the briefing, Lombardo offered a key update to the shooting timeline that officials previously laid out. Lombardo said that six minutes before the gunman opened fire — shooting at concertgoers far below his 32nd floor suite in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino — he first shot a hotel security guard and injured him.

Lombardo had previously said that while he did not know what caused Stephen Paddock, the 64-year-old gunman, to stop shooting, he assumed it was due to the security guard’s arrival.

Absent really knowing much about the condition of the guard and his ability to communicate after he was wounded, I'm pretty sure the hotel has been seeking to manage information about what went on there, as they attempt to anticipate potential liability issues.

On edit:

Apparently the location and condition of the guard was either not known to the hotel, or not communicated to police:

Police officers who started searching the hotel after the shooting began didn’t know a hotel security guard had been shot “until they met him in the hallway after exiting the elevator,” Lombardo said. He didn’t say whether Campos notified casino security after he was shot.

That was by the room. He went to investigate it and that's when he got shot. Earlier report had him showing up outside the room after the shooting had stopped and he was publically credited for diverting the shooter's attention.

And coupled with the comments from the sheriff about possible escape plans, that's kind of fishy. Assuming the hotel doesn't have full security camera coverage of all the floors, otherwise the police would be able explicitly rule out someone else being there beyond the "absence of evidence."

was bolted shut by the shooter. So that can't be right.
