http://www.wdsu.com/article/2017-2018-winter-forecast/12813894If the lingering summer temps have you wondering when sweater weather will finally hit, don't worry. Winter is on its way, and this won't be a mild, light jacket affair. Meteorologists are predicting an above-average snowfall will bury the Northeast, with subzero temperatures chilling the Plains to a not-so-toasty negative 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Both the New York City and Boston areas could see an extra 6 inches this season, so treat yo' self to a new snow shovel, or maybe even a slopeside trip. "This year is going to bring a good ski season in the Northeast," says AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok. "And around the holidays we should have some snow for the interior Northeast."
The Farmer's Almanac predicted a similar season for New England when it announced this year's forecast in August. According to the guide's 200-year-old formula, the Atlantic seaboard will see big storms on January 20-23; February 4-7 and 16-19; and March 1-3.
While those Midwest winters are always never-going-outside-again cold, the Plains region and Great Lakes areas can expect especially frigid temps going into 2018. Pastelok is predicting regular subzero readings, including that frightening negative 30 number. While he says the Dakotas should see less snow, the Rockies can expect a solid dumping. The ski season is shaping up there as well thanks to a weak La Niña, an ocean-atmosphere phenomenon associated with cooler temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.

(29,666 posts)then would melt some during the day, then freeze, and melt some again during the day. HATED IT. Either snow and stay until Spring, or don't snow. It was horrible last year. I live in Southeasten MN.

(62,416 posts)with climate change I don't expect that trend to change.
We had only a little snow last year in SE Iowa and that is also a trend I don't expect to change.

(395 posts)This is the 6th year in a row they predicted above average snow in my area. Last two winters have been mild. Over the past decade they were wrong 60% of the time on snow and 50% wrong on temperature. I'm guessing the another mild winter again due to El Nino. I can randomly guess like the best of them too.

(7,863 posts)I have more faith in the woolly worms. I hope it's mild. My windows need replacing, and my bank account said, "BWAAHAHAHAAA!!!" So that's probably not happening.
🐛 (we need a wooly worm emoji, in the meantime, have this little green caterpillar instead)

(1,896 posts)These conditions have not historically created extreme cold and snow in the northeast.
He also states that he predicts a weal La Nina. The ENSO prediction is for a La Nina conditions to develop.

(16,199 posts)And predicted above average in early summer even when it was cool and wet. It didn't get nice this summer until August.
