died. One of his sons said the 100 year old father reached his 99 year old mother's room but she couldn't get out. They both died.

Seriously I'll take my chances with the hurricanes.

California has a long history of wet winters followed by hot, dry summers - a lot of native plants have evolved to take advantage of this - and fires. What's changed in recent years is that more and more people are moving into the dry interiors where fires are more likely to occur and therefore more people are being directly affected by them. The Bay Area news had a good explanation for what contributed to the destruction: a dry off-shore flow can barrelling down from the hills through a narrow canyon that acted as a funnel to send the hot air and fire into a residential neighborhood.

Now, global climate change is real. But IMHO it's currently amplifying natural phenomena that have been occurring for centuries if not millennia.
