Hes wishing for what is essentially slavery, the ACLU said.

Marjorie Esman, executive director for the ACLU of Louisiana, told HuffPost that Prators desire to keep prisoners purely for their free labor is essentially slavery.
The purpose of the criminal justice system is to keep the community safe and to make sure that nobody is incarcerated any longer than necessary, Esman said. Its certainly not to provide free labor for law enforcement officials ― that is essentially slavery. It is obviously not only ludicrous but a gross violation of peoples rights.
Its almost as if he forgets that hes talking about human beings like hes speaking about animals or cattle.

(15,805 posts)The US strongly condemns it when China does it, so how is the practice legal in any state? When private or state prisons force inmates to work they gain an unfair advantage in profits and benefits by competing with private businesses. All that free labor reduces wages and denies employment to people who might have normally been hired to do those jobs. That hurts the whole community and it just goes downhill from there.
