They survived six hours in a pool as a wildfire burned their neighborhood to the ground

Jan Pascoe and her husband, John, were trapped. The world was on fire, and Jan was hyperventilating from fear. Then they remembered their neighbors’ pool.

“You’ve got to calm down, Jan,” she told herself. “You can’t go underwater and hyperventilate.”

At 12:40 a.m. Monday, Jan called 911. She reached a dispatcher.

“We are going to get into the neighbors’ pool, should we do this?’

The dispatcher said, “Get anywhere safe.”

“Please. We will be in the pool,” Jan replied. “This is where we are.”

“In my naivete, all night long,” she would tell me later, “I thought someone would come to get us.”

It's quite a story.

Once authorities can go through the ruins. It's hard to believe a lot of people weren't trapped by the fire--maybe never even waking up--or without a pool to jump into and be able to hang on for hours.

The roads in that area are all little 2 lane country roads, they back up every day for no reason at all because they're inadequate to the population.

I have no doubt a lot of people couldn't get out. Even if they woke up in time and knew which way to go to safety.

Did the Nationsl weather service people resign, get budget cuts? Something feels abnormal here.

It's not like a hurricane where a weather system builds for many days in advance of landfall. Conditions for fires like this exist over wide areas for long periods of time and nobody can predict when some natural or human cause lights a fatal spark.

What is indeed abnormal is the frequency and severity of the fires, which is an expected consequence of climate change.

You know when it's dry and conditions are bad for them, but there is no prediction process for when one will start of how it will spread.

Most of these are started by human activity, making predictions even more impossible.

I'm seeing continuous coverage on the fires.

It's the lead off story on even my local news here in NC. I've heard it reported on the radio, and it's in all the papers daily. It has been the lead story on the morning news shows, the evening news, etc.

CNN has done some large pieces on it, interviews with people who barely survived, video on the ground.

What channel do you watch?

to breathe since a fire can suck out the oxygen. They survived. Their neighbors who tried to drive out a narrow road with fire all around had the tires melt off their car and they died. That was in Lakeside, a suburb of San Diego. Until now, that had been the deadliest fire in CA history, but the toll of this is far worse.

My school, I was a teacher until I got sick, is in Mira Mesa and many teachers who lived in the "Rancho" areas lost their homes. It was horrible! 1,500 home were lost and the fire jumped across the freeways where 163 and 15 merged (over 12 lanes). For the first time in the history of San Diego City School District school was cancelled for a week. Then it happened again in 2007.

WTF is the problem with STATE /FEDERAL fire fighting management coordinating with our Federal emergency broadcasting system?

Part of the transition in January was extensive work with disaster response policies between Obama Admin 'management" and Republicans new people.
Transition spent DAYS in workshops helping the NEW PEOPLE with the system.

Republicans DISASTER management is FAILING to coordinate with STATES. People are dead because of this.
HIGHEST MANAGEMENT IS SLACKING!
