(17,064 posts)Yes, at this point whomever is running as the GOP candidate will go down in flames. But, do you run a candidate the base is excited about, thus helping down-ticket races; or do you run a candidate the base hates, and take a blood-bath in the other races? I am sure there are GOP strategists discussing that right now.

(16,327 posts)I always thought the real first-tier GOP candidates were going to beg off 2008 and wait for their shot in 2012. Mitt is the candidate by default only, not because anyone is genuinely excited about his candidacy or prospects.
