GOP Rep. breaks with Trump: Cutting health care subsidies does 'opposite' of what he promisedBY AVERY ANAPOL - 10/13/17 07:54 AM EDT
A Republican lawmaker slammed President Trumps action on health care Friday, saying it is the opposite of what he promised.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said that cutting key payments to ObamaCare insurers will mean more of her constituents will be uninsured.
POTUS promised more access, affordable coverage, Ros-Lehtinen tweeted. This does opposite.

Mitch McConnell owns this trend, he refused to do any actual work and forcing President Obama to make Exec. Orders to get anything done and now, like everyone predicted, it is coming back to bite every one in the ass. The Rethugs OWN all of this.

If not for the retirement, there is no way she would have made a statement that bold. Unfortunately the only Republican truths are coming from members like that, the Corkers...
Hard to believe TheHill.com left out the aspect about pending retirement.

(11,738 posts)I am glad people are speaking out, but have to say...really? Trump was going to make healthcare cheaper, more accessible, and better for more Americans? In what fantasy land was he going to do this without using massive government power to bring the prices down, enforce higher standards of care, and grant people access?
There is NO MARKET SOLUTION to healthcare because healthcare is not a consumer good, it is a necessity of modern life. You can make it in many places without a car, without a smartphone, without a computer, etc... Those are products that have become very important but they are not necessities. Everyone needs healthcare at some point, and to make healthcare a commodity that operates on a profit motive is ridiculous.
Healthcare is a complicated service because people's incentives to use healthcare are not based on a rational process. We need it when we need it and often when we don't, we can't be bothered to think about it. Even when we need it sometimes we put it off until it becomes an emergency. We need to invest in more education about healthcare and make it truly affordable with universal access. We need to promote better nutrition, less stress, and more active lifestyles. It is going to take legislation and a cultural shift that is going to be a lot of heavy lifting that the free market has no incentive or desire to promote because there is no real gain for them.
Anyone who believed that Trump was going to deliver better, more affordable, and more accessible healthcare than what we have with the ACA, without going the single payer or universal coverage route is plain and simply ... stupid.

(23,099 posts)We knew Repugs would stand by their man, no matter WTF he did, as long as it didn't hurt them politically. McCain, Corker and Dent are retiring, so are free to state the truth - the emperor has no clothes. I haven't heard, however, that either Sasse or Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), are retiring, so both of their anti-Drumpf comments are very significant. It's the first time any Repug who plans to stay in office has come out against him since he took office. Wonder if Collins is going to back down and get more onboard with his health plan killing now that she has decided to stay in the Senate?
I want the drip, drip to turn into a steady flow of condemnation, it's exactly what he's earned.

(157 posts)Starting with the ACA itself, which she voted 'NO' on, she has voted with consumers 10% of the time. 18/20 of her votes on healthcare legislation have been against consumers. Her voting record is atrocious and an absolute disgrace when it comes to healthcare. Look no further than all the times she voted to repeal all or parts of the ACA. She has zero credibility to speak out about anything related to healthcare when she blew 90% of her opportunities to do the right thing.
Check out this phenomenal website to see for yourself how she and all others have voted when it comes to healthcare.

(81,267 posts)I do a really great clucking-squawking chicken imitation. I find I'm doing that a lot whenever I see some of these Congressional or Senate or gubernatorial CONS flapping around on TV making all kinds of flabby, anemic excuses about why they still feel they need to support trump.
Not a backbone in the bunch. And ol' Ileana is only speaking up because she isn't seeking reelection and she thinks she can afford to color outside the lines for once. They only find their spines when they think the coast is clear. If they were running for reelection they'd all have their presidential kneepads strapped on and then laminated in place.
