(34,136 posts)If Congress allows the Bush Tax Cuts to expire (go "off the cliff" at the end of the year, then force the Republicans in Congress next year to pass tax cuts for ONLY the 99% (or whatever percentage actually deserves them).

(1 post)O'donell described it beautifully. Republicans and Norquist be scared be very scared. Democrats please for once stand your ground and do the right thing.

Of course you don't want your taxes to go up.

Are you under the false impression that ALL Democrats enjoy paying high taxes?
DURHAM D
(32,610 posts)You know... someone who believes in equality. Which would, of course, mean fair taxing policy.
I guess you are not.
So, why are you here?
kctim
(3,575 posts)The mistake you make is in thinking that YOU get to define "equality for all people," and you do not.
Raising taxes on us lower income people at this time would create undo hardship on us and I am not willing to suffer additional hardship because progressives THINK Republicans will fold.
You want to raise taxes on the wealthy, fine. But do it without raising mine.
What is this "us lower income people"? Which is it - are you high income or low income?
"suffer additional hardship" LOL if you are indeed 1%.
Motown_Johnny
(22,308 posts)Your taxes are going to go back to where Clinton had them, deal with it.
kctim
(3,575 posts)that the economy will collapse, means nothing. Your OPINION that people should suffer hardship so that you can win some political point, means nothing.
You OPINION doesn't mean jack-shit on this.
Deal with it.
Motown_Johnny
(22,308 posts)Also the people who are actually suffering hardship are not in the one percent. The very fact that you think you are the ones suffering hardship proves beyond any doubt that it is your OPINION that is mistaken here.

(22,308 posts)why are people just catching on now?
I'm not crazy about the cuts to domestic spending that are included with going off that cliff but the Bush tax cuts need to go away so we can pass our own tax cut bill. The Obama Tax Cuts must be the new norm and the new phrase used for the next decade.
I would even try to include a higher tax bracket or two for people making very large amounts of money and place higher rates on them. Let the (R)s fight a tax cut for 98% of American, even if it does raise taxes on 1%. Screw 'em.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)But if that's as long as it lasts, it won't have a long-term deterimental effect on the economy. If it stretches out too long, and the lower and middle class get stuck with a sizeable tax increase, it will do some damage in that disposable income will be reduced.

(53,410 posts)This type of opposition is something I really like. Almost always there's a way of taking the power away from someone which doesn't entail direct confrontation or conflict. It usually entails going through the 'back door' and taking the power away in a way the power monger is incapable of stopping.
It's kind of like Wiley Coyote and the Roadrunner. Let Norquist hang there in mid air off the cliff so he falls because of his own actions.

(1 post)Yes, After we fall off the cliff, AND Obama wins taxes for the middle class and working poor will DECREASE. We need to give President Obama a good congress that loves this country and is willing to negotiate a new tax code. If Romney wins, he will send social programs to the states and state taxes will rise in those states that adopt the programs. The wealthy who don't want to pay higher state taxes will move to states that do not adopt those programs. And the middle class and working poor who cannot move will be overwhelmed with taxes. Government needs to exist to regulate. They are not there just to collect taxes and make policy that protect wealth.
Privatization of government is fascism. We cannot allow our taxes to go to CEO who will require millions of dollars in salaries. Those will have to come from us. Our taxes will have to go up. We prefer to pay a civil servant's salary instead of private companies CEOs salaries.
