We Have to Face What Is

Last edited Mon Oct 23, 2017, 04:53 PM - Edit history (4)

Charlottesville made many people sit up and pay attention given the KKK and Nazis openly marching in the streets in broad daylight.

But I promise you they’re truly the tip of the iceberg. While there are myriad examples of more subtle but still insidious ways racism manifests — in individual behavior and in our institutions — and I try to point them out, let me share some examples of the overt racism I’ve personally witnessed. This is present throughout the country. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s contained in the South. NOT AT ALL. (It’s present in other countries too but I focus on the US.)

Please keep in mind that these are people in my generation and the generation before and after me. This sickness isn’t limited to one generation. It’s not going to die out on its own.

Many of you know these same people. They are everyday Americans, people with qualities you admire, people who care about their family and friends…”good people”…people you’d be shocked to know have these views. Because we’re conditioned in our culture to not talk about things that really matter — anything that could be deemed controversial and lead to hard conversations — I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that you don’t realize you know people with these views. (Though Facebook has been a real eye opener, especially over the last two years, huh?)

2. That's a good little article, although your link in the OP is broken.

An important thing to note is that Trumpsters do not represent a majority of the population. If Dems actively start trying to appeal to people who didn't vote at all, we could keep that insane, delusional minority at bay until the end of time.

I keep forgetting Medium links don't work here. I edited to provide a clickable hyperlink option. Thanks again.

I interpreted this piece as being more about how prevalent white supremacist views and racism is -- it goes beyond Trump supporters. And being aware of how bad it really is IN Trumpsters can, hopefully, make people more aware of how it manifests all around. Too many people deny it exists at all, and that's in people across the ideological spectrum.

4. Yeah, it's endemic to our society as it probably is in any multi-ethnic, diverse population.

We will probably always have the kinds of issues going on to some degree. But we can put the true crazies on this issue who do not want to compromise or try to understand at all back where they should be if those of us who are on the side of inclusion and desegregation come together, and that is the majority of our society. We need to try to appeal to everyone in that group.
