Headline: "Pay to play: Facebook rolls out nightmare scenario for publishers on its network "
Facebook is testing out a change to their network in six markets. As a result, posts from some publishers and businesses will be removed from the sites News Feed section. The change has caused a dramatic drop in referral traffic to news outlets.
The posts will now only be shown in a separate tab called Explore Feed, which was officially unveiled last week. The test is only active for people in Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Slovakia, Serbia, Guatemala, and Cambodia. Facebook confirmed the test on Monday, which was first spotted by Slovakian journalist Filip Struharik.

Stories from publishers and businesses are being transferred from the main feed to the Explore Feed, while the main feed is reserved for posts from friends and family.
-----------------
Without any evidence or sources or reasoning or arguments to back it up, RT is already imagining a "nightmare-scenario" (their words) where publishers have to pay to show up in the newsfeed (Facebook has not indicated any such thing).
Why, oh why, is RT going full-panic mode just because Facebook is prioritizing friends and family news over news delivered by third parties...

(32,645 posts)They need to stop accepting advertising - paid ad space - in the format of a "news" story.
Advertising is space that should be set aside and clearly identified as such. It doesn't have any editorial reason for being there. The news format needs to be reserved for editorial content only. Upon reviewing the advertising material, if it is found to be objectionable on moral, political or social grounds, it must be rejected by Facebook for clearly stated reasons.
If they don't do this, the nightmare of 2016 will never end.

(6,568 posts)I've regularly done ad campaigns for my band and for the music shop I work at. You choose which post you want to boost (whether it contains a link for a website or a video or a picture or whatever), set the target audience and duration, pay, and you're done.
Same with Google and other companies who offer ads. There's no middleman checking the ads, they rely on community reporting.
