(63,215 posts)By "many" I mean "upwards of two dozen, at least." Not a representative sample, I grant, but the sentiment is certainly out there and certainly predates this current round of Trump-inspired idiocy.
Hmm. "Jeffress."
Any connection to this young woman? She has a far cooler claim to fame this week...

(13,903 posts)Protestants in the US have always been going after the Catholics.
The church was on the KKK's list right behind black folks, probably still is.
This jeffress dude is just another christofascist theocrat, like Moore and Gohmert etc.

(13,485 posts)This idea had been running around in evangelical circles for decades, even centuries. Southern Baptists love this one because it legitimizes they're religion against one that is more than 10 times older, not to mention theirs originated from Catholicism and they can't stand that. It's so petty to see ideologies pitted against others. The most heinous crimes against humanity geminated from such.
Irony: Hitler stated in Mein Kampf, "I am a Catholic for life." Yet these evangelicals knowingly or not choose the fascist politics that Hitler inspired.

(4,723 posts)My dad's family actively spews anti-Catholic rhetoric, mostly that Catholics are statue and saint worshiping idolaters. They don't really think of Catholics as even Christians. Pretty sure my aunt actually thinks they are really Satanists. Since my stepmother is a Catholic, it makes for really fun times. Not having any horses in the religious race, I do a lot of eye-rolling.
Also interesting to me, tho, is my VERY Catholic stepbrother, who is rabidly conservative and supports this Koch backed movement to rewrite the Constitution. I don't get into political squabbles with him, but I always want to ask him if he is aware that, if the Evangelical Protestant theocrats take over, he might well find himself in dire straights as religiously unpure.
