FLINT, MI - The five teenagers accused of throwing more than a dozen rocks from a highway overpass - including one that pierced a van's windshield and killed a 32-year-old Mt. Morris man - were arraigned in court on Tuesday, Oct. 24, on second-degree murder and other charges.
The teens were arraigned before Genesee District Judge William H. Crawford II on Tuesday, Oct. 24 on charges of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, malicious destruction of property and other felony and misdemeanor charges in connection with the death of Kenneth A. White.
Families for both White and the suspects were in the courtroom as Crawford read off the charges for each suspect.
Crawford denied bail for all five citing "the seriousness of the nature of these charges and the danger to the public."

(22,037 posts)Right now, the defendants are accused of numerous crimes. The State now needs to prove the indictments' charges.
If the accused are convicted, then I'm with you, dalton99a. Trash needs to be thrown out.

(26,268 posts)The 17 year old is the one who threw the fatal rock. I'll be kind of surprised if they all go to trial.

White's family declined to comment on the incident Tuesday, Oct. 24.
The teens are due back in court on Nov. 2.
Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell previously said tires and an engine piston also were thrown from the Farrand Road overpass onto I-75, roughly three miles north from where White was killed. Several other vehicles sustained damage, including flat tires, from items thrown onto the interstate.
What they did was vicious and premeditated. Throw the book at them.

(30,745 posts)something like this has happened. I remember someone throwing a cement block off an overpass. It may have been more than fifteen years ago. The guy killed a young man with a family. The murdered man was driving home from work.
There was a witness. The murderer went to jail.

(11,841 posts)Lost 2 tires to some type of stuff tossed off an overpass. Several others did too. But no one was injured. Now there are fences on every overpass

Would be interesting to see their social media texts before this incident.

(30,745 posts)There was some vandalism that I am still bothered over. But I never endangered anyone's life or killed anyone.

(14,492 posts)I think we at least had moral boundaries back then (50s & 60s) that may not be there anymore. We need to somehow reverse that, assuming it's the case.

(2,897 posts)The deserve lots of jail time, but at their age and the charges, they all will eventually get out even if they have to serve 25-30 years. And the world would be better off if they aren't hardened and unemployable when that happens.

(20,202 posts)Then there are the other charges. It's a wonder they only killed one person.

(52,253 posts)in order to get more, you would have to show the parents were negligent, e.g., in this case, they knew the kids did this sort of thing and they didn't try to stop them.
under michigan law, anyway. other states have different laws.

(37,648 posts)What kind of evil exists in a person to do such a thing. Saw pic of the deceased man on tv...his young wife crying. A sudden senseless death. The man leaves a young wife and four small children. At least it seems he didn't suffer. The big rock went thru his car and hit him in the head and chest. Horrible.

(50,559 posts)Id say fifty years in prison sounds about right.
I know...as a liberal I am supposed to see the good in everyone and seek rehabilitation for them. Problem is, we have finite resources and there are plenty of kids we can help. I would much rather save those we can, and lock up people like these punks who we probably cant. That they killed a guy then went to eat burgers means were dealing with five potential Donald Trumps. By the time were that far along there may not be anything left to save.

(37,648 posts)I am getting long in the tooth, but I remember being a teen like it was yesterday. How I thought about things (or not), how I behaved, how others behaved. No kid I knew, no matter how bad, would have done such a thing. And I would have been aware that it could seriously hurt or even kill someone. The property damage alone would've prevented me from doing that for fun. The "bad kids" robbed vending machines. Not stuff like this.

(2,841 posts)But I've noticed "Gen Z" as a whole to be pretty apathetic to other people. I know Im broad brushing here but these jackass kids probably thought throwing rocks in the highway would cause a crash to laugh at. Im honestly surprised they didnt Facebook Live it for attention.

(6,399 posts)I mean, look at the casual way the majority of people are looking at events in Puerto Rico and numerous other instances. These kids see the apathy across the board from many. Hell, the way things just dissipated after Vegas makes that clear.
