Australian government loses majority as court rules that five members' dual nationality status

bar them from political office.
The Australian constitution is clear on this.
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2017/oct/27/high-court-rules-barnaby-joyce-and-four-others-ineligible-in-dual-citizenship-case
<snip>
The Australian deputy prime minister, Barnaby Joyce, and four senators have been ruled ineligible to sit in parliament by the high court, with only the National party’s Matt Canavan and NXT’s Nick Xenophon surviving a challenge that has hung over seven parliamentarians since their dual citizenship was discovered in July and August.

The court’s unanimous decision to uphold a strict reading of the constitutional disqualification of foreign citizens will trigger a byelection in the New South Wales seat of New England, won comfortably by Joyce, the National party leader, at the 2016 election. The court’s ruling also forced the deputy National party leader, Fiona Nash, and One Nation’s Malcolm Roberts out of the Senate. Two Greens senators, Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters, who had already resigned, were confirmed as ineligible by the court.

Joyce’s exit strips Malcolm Turnbull’s government of its one-seat majority in the House of Representatives for now, but he could return through a byelection on 2 December.

A moron running this country.

Australians are allowed dual citizenship. This problem stems from interpreting words written just over a century ago.

Look at the Second Amendment impact on this country.

So reading one's constitution does little to solve problems.

Australia will clarify the law soon enough.

What will ever be done to curb gun violence here?

Zilch?

There's a bye election on Monday in a constituency in St Mary. Our Constitution allows dual citizenship from Commonwealth countries. One candidate was born in Canada - his parents are from Grenada. He has lived here for the vast majority of his life, is married to a Jamaican and has Jamaican children. He is a medical doctor who has served at the highest levels of the Medical Association. He never applied for Jamaican citizenship.

The other party says while there is nothing illegal about him being a candidate, it's morally wrong. I call bullshit on that.
If I were that doctor, I'd do like the vast majority of Jamaican born doctors and migrate.
He has now applied for Jamaican citizenship.
