SAD. The Town That Just Doesnt Mind

“What are you taking pictures of?”

To photographer Julie Dermansky, the answer seemed obvious: the otherworldly cooling towers that dominate the skyline of the small town of Poca, West Virginia.

Dermansky just pointed to the steaming towers that loomed above the woman’s home, and she understood instantly. But the moment prior, it was as if she had forgotten the strange layout of the landscape. The towers of John E. Amos Power Plant are a nuisance to a surprising few in the small town, but are largely ignored by the people who live around them. The cooling towers: Who cares?

Dermansky did not talk climate change with the Glenns, or any Poca residents. She feared that mentioning climate change might shut down all conversation. She focused on the industrial view and pollution.

According to a survey taken by Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, West Virginia has the highest percentage of climate change denial in the United States. The study, conducted in 2016, reports that only 56 percent of the people surveyed in Putnam County believe climate change is happening. Only 42 percent believe that climate change is caused by human activities, giving the county one of highest percentages of denial in the state.
