Ruth Bader Ginsburg Stuns America; Makes Major Weekend Career Announcement.

*Ruth Bader Ginsburg, age 84, told NPR’s Mark Sherman during an interview on Saturday that, while speculation has run rampant about her impending retirement due to her advanced age, she has absolutely no intention of stepping away any time soon. When asked the question she hears so often, Ginsburg was quick to respond.

‘My answer is as long as I can do the job full steam, I will do it…I used to have an answer, it worked for a lot of years. It was Justice Brandeis, when he was appointed he was the same age as I was, 60. And he stayed for 23 years, so I expect to stay at least as long. Well, now I’ve passed Brandeis, I’ve passed Frankfurter.’'>>>

The Democrats held the Senate and the GOP would have not been able to successfully attack with the whole 'lame duck' thing. She made a mistake. Let's just hope Trump won't have to replace her.

because it would just be a liberal for a liberal. They stopped Garland because it was Scalia's seat and would have tilted the balance and because it was an election year.

I think the GOP would've done exactly what they ended up doing. It also would have been in their hands since they would've controlled the Senate. So, they could vote down anyone theoretically. And probably would have.

I still think Obama would have got someone confirmed for Ginsburg for the reasons I mentioned.

EDIT: Ill say this, Obama would have had to nominate someone very moderate maybe even a moderate republican. I just looked and it was a 10 seat gop majority so it would have been tough but I really doubt they'd filibuster for years to keep a democrat president from replacing Ginsburg.

I remember discussing this, and being ridiculed when I said if for no other reason the Supreme Court should be the reason to vote for the Democratic nominee

Unless we can get control of the Senate, its over for decades to come

One time I got so tired of articulating the bloody obvious regarding voting for the Democratic nominee (notably Barack Obama) that I started writing, simply: SCOTUS. SCOTUS. SCOTUS.

And then spent the next seven years hiding out in the BOG when he won.

Agreed.

It's rumored that her daughter tried talking to her about stepping down during that last health scare she had a few years ago, but allegedly she'd have none of it. Their "discussions" caused a bit of friction between them "allegedly" at the time.

That courts gonna be SO far right for generations to come, it won't be funny. Fatso's also packing the lower courts like mad as well

Clinton won by 3 million votes and in a sane world we would have held the Senate. Ginsburg was supposed to foresee the Trumpocalypse? Sure, looking back that makes sense, but there was no reason 3 or 4 years or so ago to imagine we'd be in this pickle today. And as we saw with Garland, she would have had to retire no later than 2015 (and really, who's to say they wouldn't have come up with even shittier excuses for not confirming an Obama nominee then

Republican would probably be elected. Historically, that's been the case. After an 8-yr run of one party, the other one has a great chance to win. So, early on in Obama's first term would have been a great time for judge retirements. He was riding on a wave of joy and Pubs would have been wary of his power then.

Assuming she lasts longer than Holmes, being female and born later, let's say she can go to 92. That's eight years.

But this isn't hindsight. I and many others have thought for years that she should retire, while a Democrat is in office, because her time on the court will be coming to an end with a few years, anyway, probably.

Let's face it. She has passed the life expectancy for a woman of her generation. She could pass on at any time, although I don't want that to happen. What is it that Justices like to stay until they keel over, clinging to their jobs until their last breath? OTOH I was sad to see Sandra Day O'Connor leave early for personal reasons. That's how we got Alito.
