Two high school football officials walked off the field in protest Friday night after players from Monroe High School in Somerset County knelt during the national anthem before the teams game against visiting Colts Neck.
The officials, Ernie Lunardelli, 54, and his son, Anthony Lunardelli, 27, stood for the anthem and then abruptly left the field after seeing the players kneeling. Their spots on the five-person crew were filled by junior cadet officials at the game, Ernie Lunardelli said.
Im not in favor of anyone disrespecting our country, our flag, the armed forces, Ernie Lunardelli told NJ Advance Media Saturday afternoon. What theyre protesting has nothing to do with the national anthem and Im against it, so I decided to protest for them kneeling and thats what I did.
Ernie Lunardelli said weeks ago he informed the officials assigner for the Greater Middlesex Conference, Thomas Paulikas, that he would walk off the field if any players knelt for the anthem before his games.
Whoever is disrespecting that flag and the national anthem, thats who I have a problem with, Lunardelli said. Thats my protest. I dont care if its a baby, if its an 80-year-old man, anybody. I dont care. Any race, color, I dont care who it is. Its not the way I was brought up and it pisses me off that people are doing that.

If we believe that the players have a right to make a point by kneeling than so do the refs.

(31,261 posts)I see that constantly online. The corrosive claim that kneelers are disrespecting the military and the flag, when in fact the protests have nothing to do with that.
pangaia
(24,324 posts)And making statements like that shows either a deliberate attempt to change the narrative (as in Fucking Moron) OR.. sheer lazy stupidity, as is most likely the case with these refs.
I mean they are high school football refs, not concert 'cellists, for Pete's sake.
On the other hand I know of a great principal orchestral'cellist who is also a girls' soccer coach. So there is that.
On edit.-- Assistant soccer coach, as he is careful to point out. LOL

never has been, in any context.
kneeling to get engaged?
kneeling before royalty?
kneeling in worship?
kneeling, in fact, is *specifically* a sign of respect.

in order to help Trump and keep us divided.

be considered equally disrespectful? You can't have it both ways. Either protests during the National Anthem is wrong for everyone or for no one. Those refs motives is no better or worse than the players motives. If anything the Refs motive is worse because it makes them hypocrites. That they can exercise their right to "protest", in this case the players actions, during the National Anthem and others can't is pure unadulterated bullshit. But then I'm not surprised that the irony has been lost on this white middle aged priviledged Ref and his equally 27 year old priviledged son who also happens to be a Ref.
